Problems That Confront The Irrigator. When Should Water He Applied? This is n question to which n definite answer can not be given, except that water should be applied before the plant shows distress. It therefore follows that the time when water should be applied can uot be determined by watching the plant. Thrifty growth should char acterise a crop from start to finish Kven a small degree of drought will induce some plants to cuter upon maturing processes und then a new moisture supply may start an undesirable new growth rather than promote the old. Many irrigators decide when their crops should be watered by an examination of the soil. A rule which has been frequently given is to take a handful of eurth from a tew inches below the surface aud press it in the hand. If, when re leased, the mmI holds together iu a ball, and shows the marks of the augers, irrigation is not necessary, but if it dees not hold together wat er should be supplied. The time when crops should be irrigated de pends, then, upon the nature of the crop, the soil, and the weather, so that no dates can be suggested for any locality. The best sources of information on local practices are the agricul tural experiment stations in the dtAereut states ami territories, which are trow very properly giving much attention to this subject. A Danjer In Irritation. Experience throughout the arid region is demonstrating that the reatet danger to irrigated land is lack of drainage Water applied 10 crops raises the ground water, which brings with it the salts dts-.-olrd from the soil: capillarity brings this water to the surface, where it evaporates, leaving the lts to accumulate until all vegeta tion is destroyed. The only insur ance against this is proper drainage. Wherever possi ble water should be applied in such a way that the surface soil will not be wet, aud cultivation should fol low as soon as possible, and be re peated often. This will check evaporation and keep the water in the soil for the iik ol plants, mak ing it unnecessary to apnlv more so soon as it would otherwise Ik needed, and in this way reduce the volume which might go to damag ing the laud.
