wealth producers in American agri
culture, contributing annually
about $300,000,000 to the agricul
tural output. There should be
more hens iu the upper Deschutes
valley.
At present good pork is consid
ered almost a delicacy in Uend it
is so scarce. There is no danger
that the market will be overstocked.
Raise loot crops, then fatten hogs
on those crops, with the help of at
little gram. There should be more
pens with grunting porkers in them.
Diversified farming is the farm
ing that pays. That should be the
kiud practiced in the Upper Des
chutes valley.
Theory is said to be the pathfind
er of discover', but it takes exper
ience to pilot it ou the way.
Problems That Confront The Irrigator.
Flooding: in RcctmiKtitnr Checks.

has been largely superseded by the
use of contour checks, except iu
orchard, vineyard, and garden
work. Unless the land is very
nearly on a level, much earth ha.s
to be shifted iu making the rectan
gular inclosures, and the levees are
of irregular heights, while levees
on contour lines are practically
uniform. There is, consequently,
vreater difficulty iu passing machin
ery over theiu. ifor orchard nnd
vineyard, where the rectnugulnr
arrangement of the trees and vines
continually interferes with contour
work, rectangular checks are wide
ly used where the character, of the
soil calls lor floodiug. They may
be large, inclosing quite an area of
vine or trees, or they may lie very
asiuau, even out 10 teei square.

accords with the rows iu which such
products are (trowu. Iu such cases
the laying off is temporary, as when
the crops are gathered, or at the
end of the season's succession of
crops, the levees are plowed down,

plowed and harrowed and the levee
system restored, sometimes by
backing furrows each way and flu-
itmnz witn rinr.o tools or ry using
a ridger. etc.
Iu small gardens it may be
thought better to retain the levee
system and work the bottoms of the
checks with fork or spade, accord
ing to the usual methods of hand
power gardening. Iu field work on
level land the checks may be so
large that teams are used inside the
levees, and iu that case the irriga
tion arrangements are permanent.
f Whether, however, the levees be
temporary or permanent, the water
is applied about the same way de
scribed last week for the contour
check system.
Iu the most satisfactory work in
rectangular checks the check bot
toms are approximately leveled by
scraping the hummocks into the
low places, using surplus dirt for
the levees. Crading or leveling
very desirable aud the initial cost is
returned many times over iu the
ease and satisfaction with which
the water is evenly distributed in
side the check. This is often done
by running small furrows between
the plants in the check bottoms so
that the water is led this way aud
that until all the plants are equally
supplied.
The Daprasced lied.
The depressed bed, largely used
in the growing of vegetables and
small fiuits, is reully a form of rec
tangular checking. In this ease,
however, the levees are widened so
that they are not merely boundaries
to confiue the spread of the water
to the inclosed areas, but they are
also made to carry water to these
areas by small raised ditches which
are mad upon their tops. It is
best for light, sandy loam, which
has slight reter.tiveuess and there
fore loses moisture rapidly both by

them on more retentive soil, aud
which will lie described presently,
make very sati factory growth and
have along fruiting season if grown
iu a depressed bed, especially if they

lowed to distribute itself under this
cover by admission Irotu the raised
ditch at several points at the same
time The ditch at the surface level
is much lcs satisfactory iu such
work; consequently it is run along
the top of the levee. This arrauge
meut is particularity adapted to
very light soils, as stated, aud espe
cially in the hotter twits of the arid
region, where w-uer has to lie
applied once or twice a week to
shallow rooting plants and where
the shading of the ground by a
mulch lowers its teuqierature and
protects the roots Irout hat, which
would be apt to destroy them iu
spite of the frequent use of water
alone. Thi recourse take the
place ot mulching and sprinkling
and is vastly better for a hot, arid
locality. The sprinkled water flies
off from the mulch with great
rapidity und much water is ued
with little benetit to the plant, while
the filling of the depressed bed
from the ditch and spreading the
water through and under the
mulch is very economical of water
and of most direct advantage to
the plant.
For the hot, dry season of the
year, in places wbete there is no
danger 01. supersaturating the soil,
the depressed bed is available for
all kinds of vegetables aud small
fruits and flowers, and the use of
this system is really the secret of
success in growing them iu some
regions.
It is quite widely employed also
by market gardeners and others,
even where heat is not excessive,
but where a light, sandy soil jtre
dotninates A prominent example
of this is iu the sand hills south of
Sau Francisco, where the vegetable
growers, who are largely natives
of the Mediteiraneau countries.
have translormed large areas of
hillsides into terraces and on these
have arranged depressed beds,
chiefly of quite small areas, and
are growing large quantities of
garden truck. The water is raised
by windmills aud pumps from
wells in the low places and deliv
ered into small flumes which run
from the windmill towers to the
opposite hillsides, supported by
very light, high trestles. The
water is then, after supplying the
highest terrace, conveyed most in
geniously by troughs or small
ditches from terrace to terrace until
ull the beds have been filled. The
terraces are so narrow and the beds
on them so small and irregular iu
shape that depressing them and fill
ing them from time to time seems
about the only available way to
make use of such little corners of
leachy soil. The system calls for
an immense amount of hard hand
work, but the Mediterranean im
migrant seems born to it. Farm
