The results of the lntc primary erection in the main seems to have becn satisfactory to the people of the state but they have had to pay roundly for the privilege of nomi nating the candidates of their choice. In Multnomah county each vote cost the tax payers 50 cents and in some of the outside counties the - cost was as high as $1 for each vote cast. Experience shows that the - primary ignore expensive than the election. In-as-much as there is no limit to the number of candt -dates that can seek office at the "primary and as that number is itmitea at me election, mucu more time will be consumed in coun tW votes cast at the former than at the latter with a corresponding increase m cost. Doubtless after the novelty wears away fewer candidates will seek ' nomination at the primary but there will always be plenty of pub lic spirited citizens who believe that the people want them and who are willing to sacrifice themselves -and incidentally to swell the cot of primary elections. The cost to candidates seems to be much greater than under the convention system. Bourne the ' successful candide for senator paid out over $12,000 for postage aloue; his expenditure for printing and newspaper advertising, which is now apparently the chief expense of candidats, must have been several times that amount. It is said that an unsuccessful candidate for a,: state office paid out $14,000 while the man who received the nomi ' nation got off with $10,000. These sums are out of all reason and are prohibitive to any man of moderate means who aspires to the '"tigiier offices. As a matter of fact, however, experience shows that a man whom the people recognize as eminently fit for the positiou to which he aspires need not spend his money to secure the office. The late Senator Hoar was, compara tively speaking, a poor mau and without any of the tricks of the couveutional politician, yet he repre sented his state for many years in the United States senate. The people of Massachusetts re cognized his fitness and honored themselves by retainiug years iu that high office. him k I "Or " J UmiGR BURBANK, BOTAN.ST. Among the reports that came in 1 tjie first days after the great earth-1 quake in California no mention was' made of the fate of Luther Bnrbank, the world-famous specialist in ere- ative botany, who for a number of, years has resided and carried' on' his work upon a small farm near Santa Rosa, California. The Bews-paper corrsspdnderits . apparently forgot the existence of ' such a mqti. or imagined that the public took no interest in his wel fare. As n matter of fact, Mr. Bur bank did not suffer from the great earthquake.. , - If men's claim to fame depends upou their services to mankind, then surely Luther llurbauk will stand among the most eminent men of modern times. His knowledge of plant-life and especially his abil ity to produce plants of desiittl characteristics from the union of individuals of the .fiuuc or differ ent species nmouuts lo unertiug instinct. The Burbauk seedling potato, the result of otic of Mr. Burbatiks early experiments in the production of a new variety has been for years the leading potato iu the market and is said to have enriched the farmers of this country to the ex tent of 30,000,000. The number of fruits and flowers cither improv ed or actually originated through brecdinj: by Mr. Burbank b said to be more than 2,000. Of all the marvelous things this man has done, the most wonderful is the production of a sepcies of cactus which will grow under the same oonditions as the ordinary variety yet is free from the deadly spines and furnishes -an abundance of nutritioun, finely flavored food for man and domestic animals. The cultivation of this cactus will render inhabitable large stretches of what is now hopless desert, thus vastly increasing the number of the people the earth can support. How much greater is the hom age due to a man like Burbank than to many whom the world docs linitnfl """" --f- The dcluce of exnostire and J denunciation which has been pour- in5 upon the U. S. senate for the j ,as ycar or 'c through the col- umns of magazines and newspapers, has at lost called forth a protest from that august body. Senator Lodge recently rose in his seat and with trembling earnestness de nounced these attacks as mere ex pressions of disapproval on the part of the public of the attitude of the .senate in relation to certain public questions.. Said he, "The senate j has been assailed as violently before when it has undertaken to perform the duties for which the constitution designed it. Checks and balances are not popular and the brake which is essential to preserve the train from accident or destruction not infrequently jars some people's nerves when it is applied. The Seriate of Aldrich and Foraker, Platt'and Depew, Mitchell and Clark is sHfelypassing. It begins to look as if few ot the older residents of Kastern Oregon would escape the dts'Unctfotj" 6t being mixed up in some timber deal. Much lo the improvement of pub lic morals, the career of nutlnw Prank Smith came to u speedy end. The details of his crimes, pursuit and killing have been related with minute particularity by the daily papers, much to the enjoyment of the morbid. The laws of Oregon surround executions of the death sentence with a considerable de gree of privacy although the pres ence of newspaper reporters is not forbidden as in some states. The legislature ought to go n step fur ther and forbid the publication of the details of a career like Smith's. It is a brutalizing story and its pub- a . . aa . aa. ucattou, at least in tun detail, was productive of no good. Big Sticks In Oregon. 'Made in Oregon" Exposition Portland. The "Made in Oregon" idea that of purchasing the best goods at home prevails elsewhere, and has made an impression 011 distant in dustrial communities. Papers in Pittsburg, Providence, Philadelphia, Cleveland and New, York and Buff alo arc commenting upon the enter prise and its bearing upon" the mar- kci which is suppueu Willi goous made iu eastern sections. "Ore gon, says the Providence (Rhode Island) Journal, "is setting up, as far as it can, a defense against com petition from without." The de fense is a legitimate one. The en couragement of home industrial en terprises and the patronage of home industries, which is the object of the present campaign of publicity, imposes no hardship nor expense on any one. 1 he Journal says that the idea is a logical form of pro tection. It is not "protection" that is needed against eastern manufactur ed commodities, but rather edu cation of our own people so that they may understand that the pur chase of the eastern commodities is of no advantage to them, but is of some loss to Oregon ians. Home-made articles stand on their merits, both as to price and quality, and in making an appeal to the public spirit of the Oregon ians the manufacturers of these goods do not feel that they arc ask ing that any sacrifice be made. Mouse Cleaning Contagion. Kven Chicago has contracted the "cleaning up" fever. "Down with dirt' Make Chidaim Spot less Town!" is tile purport of a procla mation issued bv Mayor Dunne. The Mayor asumes the honor of head house maid and appoints Chicago's j.ooo.ixo citizens underuuids. ., The mayor's Prjlcr fixing May as house-cleaning day -j explicit: "Oct busy, beat carpets, gather garbage and see that it connects with the rubbish col' lector, make the school children clean the premises, have the houicvife nuke her home spick aujl spat). . There is to be 1.0 dirt in Chicago, after May 7." Special attrition is callcti to the tin can instructions. Ihc measure is not designed in the interest of crcculeri pups, but because all, refuse which carries a menave of di&easctinust he removed. And when it is ddjJd, Head housemaid Dunne will make -d .tour of inspection and reward the ipxli p.ood with an ap proving sniilet, Out the careless and shiftless, the toleratoni of the unclean, will be destroyed. It is 'gratifying to note how inauy of JpenTlcttreens are improving their cremlses afcul.adioininir vacant lots'by giving them a general' clean ing up. There has been much Toregon 9 6 done in this Hue during the past week. Kvery citizen should tnke a personal interest not only iu his own yard but in the streets mid see that nil papers, cutis and refuse are kept from the street.
