Attic In (ho Stunts Hotel Catches
Fire.
The W. II. Stants hotel at Des
chutes caught fire yesterday and
caused considerable excitement and
hard work for n few minutes. A
stovepipe, running through the
ceiling, an attic and the roof, is
believed to have been the cause.
When the fire was d covered the
cud of the attic was ablaze nnd be
fore i was put . atlt it had burned
seven oV .eight .jliolcs through the
roof and had caused considerable
damage to" the nttic. The fire had
gotten well under way before it was
discovered and if it had been given
a little more time would have prob
ably destroyed the building. A
bucket brigade to nnd from the
river finally cqnnuered the fire.

out the gambling evil within its

charged with the violation of the
city ordinance prohibiting gam
bling, caused nu unusual ripple of
excitement for a few days, accom

posed of six men good and true, dis
agreed as to the intent of the play

March 13, the council passed an

27, enncted to prevent the practice

George 1'ullian, who located about three

acre under cultivation ami is very en
thusiastic over this country. Mr. Full

Mr. McCormaclc has many acres under
cultivation. Although he is almost
totally blind he still continues to im
prove his place in a marvelous way. Mr.
Nichols, near him, lias made many im

liod to leave here. We hot.e to see him
with us again soon.
Mr. Ramsey is making improvements,
clearing, etc. Mr. Murk has a neat
home place opened up and is still im

under cultivation. Mr. Coroealous still
improves his land and will have a very
neat home to show for his faith in Crook
county.

Before these formalities, were gone
through with and on. the evening of
March 19, J. I'rauk Stroud nnd
"Mickey" Yokttm were indulging
in what they claimed to be n "fun"
game of dice and of "Twenty-one"
iu the saloon of George "W. Whit
sett. Marslml I.obdell, apparently

propriety, went in during the prog
ress of the gnmc. Believing that
he knew n gambling game when he
saw it and that he was then and
there in the visible presence of the
renl thing, he caused three com
plaints to be issued under ordinance

player, one against . "Mickey" as
dealer, and one against Whitsett as
proprietor.
I he defendants were brought be
fore City Recorder F.llis the next
morning when they pleaded not
guilty. Knch was admitted to bail
and the cases continued till last
Monday, that defendants might pro
cure counsel. At the request of
the City the case of J. Frank Stroud
was first tried. The trial of the
case consumed all of Tuesday nnd
the jury nfter being out nbout eight
hours, were discharged, beinc un
able to agree. On Wednesday a
new jury was impanelled nfter a
good deal of difficulty iu securing
the requisite number of eligible
jurors. The second trial resulted
iu n disagreement, but pursuant to
stipulation the conclusion reached
by n majority of the jury was agreed
to be n sufficient verdict in the case
mul four out of the six jurors stand
ing for acquittal, nil of the defend
nuts were discharged, as it had been
further stipulated that the verdict'
iu Stroud's case was to decide the
other two. The case was prosecuted
and defended with vigor and there
was unusual interest taken in the
outcome. ,
While the defendants in these
cases were acquitted, it is the gen

Mr. McCall has cleared about 20 acres
on his desert claim this winter.
Mr. McKutt of Ios Angeles, Cal., who
owns land under the Columbia Southern
Irrigation Co.'s canal, has contracted

Ilesides these many improvements in
the lat five years, the towu of Laidlaw
has sprung up and building is steadily
going 011 ihere. It promises to be a
prosperous town. They have a daily
mail except Sunday, a telephone system,
and the beautiful Deschutes river run
ning silently by the town.
We have a mail route to Tuuutlo from
Ilend three times per week, which is a
great benefit to the matiy people in this
vicinity. Next we will have a school.

The C. S. I. Co. have a crew of men at
work on their ditch, making laterals nnd
many other improvements. They have
several men at the head of the ditch
working the water down and expect to
have water oti the desert iu a few days.
The snow is reported to tie about three
feet deep ut their headworks.
A petition for a road from TumaIo to,
Laidlliw on the township lijte most of
the way was circulated last Week. It re-f
cetvetl many names.

T. A. Jensen of Tumalo was at Laid
law Monday on business.
The surveyors working on the
proposed Natron-Ontario line across
Central Oregon are now running
their lines in the vicinity of Burns
in Harney county, and information
coming from that place says that
one crew will work toward the
northwest, heading for the Bend
country. Another crew is working
to the southwest and it is believed
that Lakeview is the objective
point. Thus it is seen that present
indications strengthen the belief
that the Oregon Short Line, run
ning west from Ontario through
Vale and Burns, will scud off two
branches at Burns or in that vicin
ity, one coming in a northwesterly
direction through the Bend country
toward Portland or some other
Oregon port, while the other will
run to Lakeview and make connec
tions there with roads building into
that place from the south and west.
There seems to be more activity
at the present time on this line
west from Ontario than on auy oth
er railroad surveys through Central
Oregon. A recent dispatch from
Vale, which is on the line of the
Natron-Ontario extension, says that
Mr. Wagoner, chief engineer for
the Short Line, expected to start on
his tour of investigation of the dif
ferent feasible routes for the Oregon
Short Line soon but owing to the
snow he decided to wait until the
weather had cleared up. He will
go down through Central Oregon
towards Lakeview and on to the
Southern Pacific lines in one direc
tion, and will also take the line of
survey talked of across the state
through Burns to Bend. Stirvej -ors
are at work now south of Burns,
at what is knowii as Narrows.
All this goes to strengthen the
belief that only a few months will
pass before construction on the road
west from Ontario will be pushing
rapidly into the interior of the state,
with the strong probability that a
branch line will be sent northwest
ward from the vicinity of Burns in
to the Bend country.

More Proof of Bright Future- for
Bend from Recent Indications.
A. M. Drake returned home last
Saturday after an absence of six
weeks in Portland and San Fran
cisco. lrom private information
obtained he is more assured than
ever that there' will soon be some
thing doing in railroad work in this
section, and that it won't be loug
before there is a second aud pos
sibly a third road into or at least
within reach of Bend.
He refuses to discuss the rumor
in regard to the proposed electric
power development, merely saying
present talk would be premature,
but practically admits that there is
something under consideration for
the future when conditions warrant.
He also refuses to make state
ment regarding the ditch company
controversy, further than that the
company has made no effort to ad
just the matter and that it will
probably have to go to the supreme
court to determine whether the,
company has any right to water
beyond the 169 second feet takeu
out through the original flume, be
fore its enlargement. He claims
.the company has no right to water
for the Central Oregon canal by
supplying it through a branch cut
ott irom the Pilot Butte cantl, and
no right to invade his U&As to
