FRIDAY, JANUARY 12, 1906
The scries of farmers institutes
which is being inaugurated iu Crook
county for the discussion of agricul
tural topics anij "for social snd
moral improvement" is a step in the
right d'rection. A sensible inter
change of ideas on any subject is
never harmful and very ofteu re
sults in much good. And any or
ganization that draws men aud
neighbors together in a social meet
ing and gets them to rub elbows
with each other deserves commen
dation. Every community is sus
ceptible to "moral improvement"
and an institute that is instrumen
tal in holding a higher ideal before
the people should receive the sup
port of all decent citizens.
catiug that Salem business men
lay before the proper officials the
great advantages over all other
routes that lie in the extension of
the Corvallis & Eastern into Cen
tral Oregon by way of Bend. It
says this is the shortest route from
Portland into the great irrigation
country cast of the Cascades, mid
easy of construction. Any agita
tion along this line should have the
co-operation of nil business interests
in this vicinity.
A vein of what is said to be ex
cellent anthracite coal 1ms been dis
covered just acrov? the Idaho line
in Malheur county. The formation
of the ground indicates n bed of
considerable extent It is located
on the Owvhec river some tr miles
from the Short Line railroad.
Ontario will be its shipping point if
the bed proves sufficiently extensive
to warrant mining, uvcry uay
brings to light some new resource
in splendid Oregon.
In the past four or five years
farmers in the Mississippi valley
have turned their attention to the
raising of sheep and found it a
profitable industry. Consequently
a great demand i now fell for
breeding ewes and they arc bring
ing high prices in Central Oregon.

FAR.MERS WILL TALK.
AMPLE MARKETS ASSURED.
The extension of the Denver,
Northwestern & Pacific railroad to
Portland brings another factor into
railroad development in Oregon. It
insures another outlet for the prod
ucts of this vait inland empire east
of the Cascades, and will give Cen
tral and Eastern Oregon direct rail
road communication with the Gulf
of Mexico.
This road is now building from
Denver to Salt Lake and David H.
Moffat, the veteran railroad builder,
has -announced his purpose to ex
tend it to Portland and tap Oregon's
great timber belt, in order to get an
outlet on the Pacific and retaliate
against Harriman for invading Mof
fat's coal fields. This furnishes an
other road through the state com
peting for business the best assur
ance possible for reasonable railroad
rates in the future.
A road east of the Cascades from
Portland to San Francisco gives
Eastern Oregon two of the best
ports on the Pacific coast for outlets
to the west; the line from Natron to
Ontario, together with the Chicago
& Northwestern which is to build
across the state, furnishes commun
ication with the great Eastern mar
kets, and the extension of Moffat's
road from Salt Lake City to Port
land opens a direct line to the gulf
of Mexico via Denver. Thus one
of the greatest factors in the devel
opment of a new country is assured
ample communication with the
great markets of the country, viz.,
the ports of the West, the markets
of the East, and the shipping points
on the Gulf.
The importance of the part that
such a condition of affairs exerts in
the development of the state, by in
suring au ever-growing market for
its products, can hardly be over
estimated. And Bend is a part of this favored
region.
NEWS AND COMMENT.
The Heppner Times says the
right of way of the north bank road
over the section o'pposite Hood
River lias cost James J, Hill at the
rate of $ 1,000 an acre. A strip less
than two miles long and 100 feet
wide has taken $48,000 to acquire.
These fabulous prices are caused
by the fact that much of' this is
very valuable fruit land, aud also
for the reason that, compe'ting
roads are supposed to be bidding
for the land. One man refuses to
sell 16 acres for $16,000. Not a
bad price for a little garden patch.
.Meet at LalJIaw January 20 to Dis
cuss Various Topics.
Laidlaw Jan it. A fanner!
institute and basket dinner will be
held at this place Saturday, Jauu
ary 20, at 10 o'clock a. ra. in the
building uow Uied for school pur
poses.
This meeting is intended to be
the beginning of a series of such
gatherings to be held front winter
to winter in the irrigated portion of
Crook county in the interests of
agriculture, horticulture, garden
ing, dairying, poultry and general
stock raising, as well as for social
and moral improvement. In short,
to take up for consideration any
subject, not of a political nature,
that may concern the founders of a
"new empire" under the splendid
possibilities of irrigation. A pro
gram will be arranged outlining the
work to be done.
Come with your basket full aud
boine for your neighbor. Come and
exchange ideas. If you are a
stranger we want to meet you and
become acquainted.
