S. Gor don. It is knowja by Bend people from Minnesota thaj Gordon was formerly a Jim Hill man in that state. This adds weight to the common belief that the line known as The Dalles-Dufjfx road is in real ity a Hill property. The departure of J. M. Lawrence on hurry orders to enter upon duty ! at Rbseburg may ause some incon venience for tUcse ,who have land business to transact at Bend. Con tests can be heard by notary public and there will probably be one in The Bulletin office. Bend will prob ably not be long without a JJ. S. commissioner, though no definite announcement can now be made regarding this matter. high office again there is no doubt he will serve them, for he is no shirk and his sense of the duties of citixenship would compel him to yield his personal preferences to the public good. A servant, public or private, who doesn't have to be watched is a great blessing. We know Trcsi dent Roosevelt will do just the same when nobody is looking ns he will with the gaic of the world riv ited upon him. He has the intelli gence to sec what is right and the courage to do it. If congress wishes to toy with a buzz saw now is as good n time as any to begin. Later it will be wiser if not so handsome. The peo ple love and trust Roosevelt be cause he is above party politics. He is the best republican and the best democrat in the country, because he is not bound by the limitations I of cither. We are sure of a railroad, perhaps several of them. We are sure of large manufacturing activ ity. We are sure of agricultural development and rapid commercial expansion. Other people are be coming sure of three, too, and art taking steps to help and receive the inevitable benefit from this progress. The man who plants seed, swear ing the while that nothing will come of it because (he harvest is not in sight, will doubtless continue to damn the Deschutes country, ac tively or with faint praise, but he does that wherever he goes. Faith less people never assist the world forward. The knockers are killing themselves off. The Deschutes country is all right, aud Bend was never before so secure as its chief town aud assistant to a safe and sane development. Bend's Wirier amatc. So congress is going to kill off Roosevelt prevent him from be coming the nominee of both parties to succeed himself. What a laud able undertaking, even lor con gress! Unless something not now within human ken shall supervene, there is but one thing that can keep Pres ident Roosevelt from another terra. That is his own determination not to accept the office. The people, practically regardless of party, are for Roosevelt. The machine politicians;, the statesmen who "can't" do otherwise than drift with the .murky current, the old "smooth-bores," the corrupt and vicious, don't want Roosevelt, of course. And that's just why the rest of the people do want him. On the day President Roosevelt was elected he gave out the state ment that under no circumstances would he again be a candidate for the office. There is no doubt that be meant it and he will stick to it under all reasonable circumstances. But if the people call him to that The Deschutes Telephone Company Telegrams ivjfU'raU4 10 Pity part of the World.
