FRIDAY - DECEMBER 15. 1505' The Deschutes , Land, company; will begin early in the spring eon structton of its irrigating works in the Walker basin, 35 miles south of Bend, and carry them through to completion, in a year. It docs not .escape notice, though1 the press has not yet taken up that phase of the matter, that the two federal appointments recently made in Oregod without consulting Senator Fulton, are of men who wear spectacles, , like the president. If this hint, is of any value, to the eye doctors and spectacle cakers they may pay advertising rates for it. 1 pression is commendable, but the sentiment will not stand examina tion. Suppose death had kindly come to Senator Mitchell before his sins found him out. What would the example have been to the world, to the young men of his own state? lie rcupeil honors in abundance. The logic is clear that the way to gain those honors was to do as he did. The school he taught was Uul, and many, ninny eople know it. Had the law not overtaken him there would have been no warning to those who believed in him. They, following in his foot steps, would surely have come to grief. As it is they are warned that he wafi ail unsafe guide ami they may not uow be lured on dangerous paths. The influence of a successful life is very great. Too many overlook the methods that frequently brinv apparent success. It is highly important for the general welfare that the truth be known and the case of Senator Mitchell, just as it stands, will go a long way toward establishing and fortifying charac ter in Oregon citizenship aud re deeming .the, state. The example would have been, very bad if Mit chell had died loaded with honors Dcntt I.tul. final l'root NOTICE FOU PUMilOATION. V. S. Land, Uffict, Thr ttollr. Of (roii, txtvHilr u, IV4$. C Wright of Baker City,', It belonged to David Wilson. A statement made by a railroad man is to the effect that Eastern people are inter ested in the deal. There are 2,000 lots in the townsite, and it is said all that belonged to Wilson were disposed of for $30,000. Ontario is the point Irom which it is now known the Harnman road across Central Oregon will leave the Short Line, and- it is supposed this fact has lead to the deal. Ha! another railroad story! Har riman, having a corps of engineers now in the field between Bend and Madras, "announces" ..that he will build from Eugene to Klamath1 Falls. How natural! Those high ptriced engineers that are doing such thorough work north, of Bend are simply mapping the scenery, locating bird's roosts and rat holes. The real design is to build else where that's why the surveyors are here. lany of these news-,.. 6c6cnit neat aad .j... Geariu, appointed by Governor Chamberlain to be United States senator to fill vacancy caused by the deatli pf Senator Mitchell, is a man of good standing and force of character. He is a democrat from principle and there is nothing of the shifty politician about him. As a lawyer he stands very high and Judge Bellinger once said there was no attorney practicing in his court who had so; clear a legal mind. A dozen years ago Mi". Gearin made a brilliant campaign for representative in congress, but there were too many republican votes and Binger Her-' mann defeated him. Since then he has not been much in politics but he has enjoyed a large law practice. Mr. Gearin is the most conspicuously fit man among the democrats for senator from Oregon. He will probably do good work, be cause he will have no hope of con tiuuing in office when the republi can legislature gets a chance to fill it- . MITCHELL'S EXAMPLE. Senator Mitchell is dead. Neither fulsome praise nor carping criticism can reach him ndw. His record is fiuishedj and it is a nota ble one. "What a pity that death did - U3t come to him a few months earlier," is a comment that is much -heard at this time.
