A row of locust trees was set
out on the Drake lawn next to the
roek wall 011 Wall street tlur
week. Many other citizens arc
preparing the ground and Netting
out trees nnd shrubs this fall, for
the beautifying of their vords.

social dance and are unceasing in
their praise of the quality of the
hospitality shown them white there.
They enjoyed a delightful dance
and lunch, and the ride in the clear
moonlight was not the least among
the pleasures of the trip.
Interest in the reading room is
increasing and there is coming to
be quite a brisk demand for the
hooks nnd Dcriodic.ils. A. II.
Grant has contributed three vol

and Kuimcrson's Essays. All arc

John Knox passed cast of Dend
Saturday, on the way home to the
Knox ranch on Ncwsoin creek
with 3,000 .sheep, which have been
on the range near the head of the
Mule Deschutes all summer. Mr.

Pumping I'Unt tor Irrigation.
K. M. Morris, who resides at
Trail Crossing 011 Crooked river, is
soon to have installed a monster
hydraulic ram, which will pump
water to irrigate 200 acres of laud.
Teams have gone to Shumku to
bring in the machinery. Tlie ram
is live times as lare as the one put
in for the UeiiU Water, i.iylit &
Power Company ami has, under
the conditions 111 winch it will be
o'HTalcd, a theoretical capacity fur
lilting 200 gallons ut water to u
height of 330 led h.t uiiiiuic.
Pred llcc, of Portland, who in
stalled the rum for the water works
company here, will have charge ul
the work of putting in the new
pumping plant, lie arrived at
llciul last 'Saturday and went to
Truil Crossing Monday. In talk
ing of tht new plum with Mr.
Hesse, it was .suggested that the
pumping sy t 111 of irrigation was
largely problematical at present.
"Yes, it is pretty much ol a prob
lem, but it is one our company Ls
confident of solving," said fie.
"We arc making machines a near
fool proof as possible. It doesn't
take much mechanical ability to
handle them. If we can show this
system to lc a success, it will mean
wveral more like it. Therearc many
other settlers along the river who
want pumping plants and are only
waiting to be shown a machine do
ing successful work before making
nu outlay for one. The rivers in
Crook county ufTord innumerable
opportunities for the use of a hy
draulic ram."
The Morris plant will cost him
in the neighborhood of $1,500.
