Men arc but children a little
older grown, the poet tells us. And
most men have the predilection of
the darkey for long words. The
like to say "experimental farm"
when they speak of the experiment
farm. They might add another
syllabic and call it "experimentally"
thus getting a little bigger mouthful.

Central Oregon is just now the
storm center of railroad activity it:
the Northwest. The Hue down thr
north bank of the Columbia may Ik
taken as an accepted, fact, but tht
Central Oregon situation is ver
much unsettled and large plan
. reipectiug it are likely to be chang
ed over night. Whether w shall
have an east-and-west line or
uorth-.aud-south line no man car
yet tell. It seems as certain a
anything in human affairs that wt
Shall have one or the other soon,
.possibly both.
This talk about the "persscution"
of the land grafters is the most ar
rant nonsense. When fat rogues
are brought to bay there is always
the cry of "persecution" raihed by
their friends, and hitherto the
charge o "persecution" has been
known to be sufficient for the re.
moval of officers whose sworn duty
lay along the line of protecting the
public interests from plundering.
The cheapest part of the "justifi
cation" which these rascals assume
is that the 1 government got
its full price . for the land, and
therefore nobody is harmed; as if
it were the part of the government
to sell goods at a profit. It is noth
ing to the government that it re'
ceivea the 3.50 per acre, but it is
everything lo,ha.ve the reasonable
requirement of t,the law observed.
The Very latitl ihat is taken as a
timber claim at'$2.$oper acre, in
many casfsunight -have been taken
as a homestead.- for nothing, and
the government would have been
even better .satisfied. The govern
ment is not iuta-ceut per cent busi
ness. It is in thcbusiuossiof carrying
, ou community affairs for the great
est good of the greatest number, not
for money profit, v And the greatest
good of the greatest -number re
quires the renfeonabTe and impartial
enforcement pf ti&ftyvts. That is
what we are now getting ip tjie
laud administration. The ' few
