FRIDAY - OCTOBER 6, 1905
The first specimen of sugar beets
from this locality was gratifying
.enough, but now comes the report
ou the second lot. which shows still
richer results and more than con
firms the most rosy view of the ad
vantages of the Deschutes valley for
the beet sugar industry.
What's the matter with continu
ing George E. Chamberlain as gov
. .ernor of Oregon? He's a democrat,
ijt's true, but a democratic governor
-can't do much good to his part
when the rest of the administration
is republican. It is vastly better
than having a governor who is a
mere cogwheel in a machine.
In the northwestern railroad field
the fights of the giants is now on
and the country will profit by it. It
1 is no longer a question of sitting on
1 tke lid. Central Oregon will gain
. much from this activity, though it
is not yet certain from what direc
. tlon or in what form that gain will
s dome-except that it will be in the
form of modern, transportation.

We have a letter from Charles A
Johns, of Baker City, in which he
, advances himself as a candidate for
governor of Oregon on the republi-
can ticket, subject to the terms and
conditions of the primary law. F.
. L. Dunbar, the present secretary c
state is The Bulletin's first choice
for governor, but since he will not
t consent we shall be very well
k 'pleased to have Mr. Johns in tht
1. field. Mr. Johns is a man of attain
, ments and positive convictions, be
, is not a factionist and his geograph-
ical position is strong. Hes ser
vice on the state text-book commis-
' sion has shown him to be a man of
force and independence.
This lawless utterance is taken
from last week's Prineville Re
view, and we reprint it for the
purpose of protesting against the
anarchy it represents:
XotwitlisUiMlltiK Ther conviction of
Messrs. Williamson, Gcctier ami Higgc.
their-friend in Prineville will be gkul
to grasp their hand in welcome whan
they return. Conviction of irregular
ities in acquiring land necessary to
carry on their hujiuesa in thin county
carries with it wo stigma except in tlt
Oregonian and the minds of federal offi
cials, and the defendants will le none the
leos popular throughout the district
because of such conviction. '
This is flaunting treason. No pos
sible occasion can warrant it, much
less the present visitation of justice.
Moreover, it does not' represent the
seutiment of the law-abiding pPu'
lation of Crook ctfunty. Grant that
there are hottest differences' of opin-iou-on
this inartery it is yet distinctly
untrue that Crobfc' county will wel
come these deflinfiauts' as formerly.
Glad as w6' would have been to
have them'restabllsit their inno
cence, they did not do it and people
who respect ths daw do not bold
them iu Ibeftfcame esteem they
would guitylcfc.lnen. We. protest

Oneill brought iu a ruta baga soj-i

smooth and firm as any that ever
grew anywhere; and a white fiat
turnip measuring 25 inches in cir

ity. IN either of these is a record
breaker for size but they are signif
icant productions of a "worthless
country," without any special
attention.
ine onerwooas Drought in a
beautiful specimen of White Cham
pion oats grown on their ranch a
dozen miles north of Bend. They
raised and threshed on 20 acres of
partially irrigated land 213 bushels
of these oats, as plump and white
is coukl be desired, after using
part of the crop for current feeding.
At the I). I. & P. Co's farm
ibout 2,000 bushels of potatoes are
ripening for the harvest. A dozen
ripe watermelons were gathered
and eaten there last week.
Mr. Buchholz, who has an irri
gated farm adjoining that of the
company, had on exhibition this
week a fine watermelon that
weighed 16 pounds.
