Since then the district has been divided and now four teachers are employed to teach 125 pupils in the same ter ritory and quite as many are now bevotid school range as were then. Two teachers are cuiployetl for 75 pupils in Bend and two in Lakllaw for about 50. WILLIAMSON UT AL CONVICT!!!). Congressman Williamson, and ills business partner Dr. Van Ges tier, and IT. S. Commissioner Biggs, all of Prinevillc, were this week -found guilty of the crime of subor nation of pur jury, upon trial in the United States court in Portland. The jury retired Monday evening at the close of the third long trial of the cause, the first two having resulted in disagreements. Tues day morning the vlrdict of guilt was returned into court. On February 1 1 the grand jury reported an indictment against ,these defendants, charging them with having induced 45 persons to fapply.in June 1902 for land in Tp. , i5S. R. 19 E. about 25 miles east of Prineville, in violation of the , law and of the oaths they made iu the applicatious. , l The penalty for this offense is a .neof not, metre th,an $2000 and . imprisonment at hard labor not more than five years, and disquali fication to testify in U. S. courts. -. , Comment at this time is useless. , ll was greatly to be desired that these men should prove their inno cence. Since they failed in that it is becoming of Crook county to be Bilcnt for the present. We cannot heap ignominy upon our neighbors: it is not good to revile the agendo of the law. . - .AS TO KNOCKERS. r The Eugene Register, in the per Formancef of its duty as a newspaper, prints the following: :tet lose lee Ute Rgter printed a atory UImi ham The Bead HalMta. la wktck m inn a few proof of the aaJraatase la lirlra thmiBpM4 through the iHnchatM ipltm alt of the Maw beiag catenated to laastrc eoaft ikMBC la th worth of that territory a an aari ' tuMtml awttoaj. The paper is undoubtedly de posed to be fair, but the "Kugene man just returned" clearly is not. The blunt fact is that lie is either , a fool or a liar, for it is impossible ,, that any person could examine a ,. large part of the Deschutes valley without seeing evidence of agri cultural progress. We venture the assertion that there is not, in the whole Deschutes valley, a single garden that "had raised nothing." Not all of these have been equally successful, it is true, but this is also true of the Willamette valley, or any other region we know of. It is true of any of the activities in which man engages, anywhere on earth. The sorehead and knocker is ...always with us. About the worst specimen of this species we ever ran across was at Harrisburg, not far from Eugene itself. Land, water, air 1 and sky of Oregon meant only fam- . ine and pestilence id his jaundiced mind. He came from Michigan aud he wasjgohig, to get right back there just assoonas hiswife could , earn money, egougk, keeping; board ers and washing! i.,Fqij Jijmself, he was too btisy, 5iHicj firqund pud '. . .cxpressiufr hi&,vie.qrs of the country ' to do anything useful. - - ' Allowances must be made for personal tnstc, of course. But when it goes to the extent of deny ing the palpable facts of production it is going too far and cannot be honest. There is right now in The Bulletin office n display of agricul tend products that would do credit to Lnue or any othe- county in the state roots, tomatoes, melons, grains, forage plants, hops all grown within a mile of Bond on new laud with irrigation and other conditions imperfect Imperfections necessarily incident to the first ex perimental season Hi a new countrv. Aud yet the knockers will tell you that the Bend neighborhood is the most worthless that God ever jwr mitted to lie out of doors. Thev know nothing about it, but it pleases them to knock. A few stockmen have sat on the Deschutes for a generation not try ing to produce anything but wild hav and cattle. "The country is no good for farming," tliey said, be cause they wanted to keep it fot gracing. Some have outgrown this spirit, but it must be admitted that too many still cling to it too many for the good of the country. The chief of these do not them selves now reside on the Deschutes. They wish to keep the Deschutes country undeveloped iu order that they may use it for stock range. Nobody asks these doubters and knockers to believe what they can- not see. If they do not see here as many broad fields as they find in the Willamette valley that is no warrant for damning this new country as a frosty rockpilc. The statement is susceptible of abundant proof that wherever in the Deschutes valley as much at tention has been devoted to crops as is required iu other farming regions the results are as satis factor'. Every country has its specialties. The Deschutes valley is learning by experience what its strong points are iu agriculture aud it is surprising every unprejudiced observer. The knockers can't kill it. Laldlaw Notes. Lawlaw, Or . Sept. J9, Lire coal iu nlte that ImmI leii taken from the stove set fire to the rear part of J. C. Tltorp'a barber slvop thin morning.
