FRIDAY
AUGUST 25, 1905
The indictment mill is ngniti
running in Portland; and they saj
It is grinding exceedingly fine.
One of the things notable in the
exploration of the Deschutes
country is that it is not a town
booming scheme. To get the Innd
occupied by producers is the main
thing. The rest will follow.
Th. effect of last winter's light
snowfall and this summers unusual
heat is quite visible in the snow
peaks of the Cascades that puncture
the sky in our western horizon.
Every peak is getting dirty and
seamy. We shall have to send
them all to laundry if snow does
not soon come to cover the dust
and smoke that has settled on the
perpetual ice fields.
There are two wrong Crook
county views respecting the Will-jamson-Gesner-Biggs
trial, One
is that the defendants can't poss
ibly be guilty, no matter what they
did. The other is that they
can't possibly be innocent. There
never was a law-breaker who had
uo friend to believe him innocent.
Because a man is our friend or rel
ative does not make him guiltless
of offense; because he is notour
friend or relative does not make
him guilty. The question of guilt
or innocence is, or should be, de
termined by the law and the testi
mony, not by our personal feelings,
one way or the other.

As was intimated in The Bulle
tin several weeks ago, the Colum
bia Southern advance to Bend will
be in two steps but it may be a
two-step that will merge into a
glide. At any rate half the dis
tance and three-quarters of the dis
comfort of the journey between
liend and the railroad will then
disappear. And while the collat
eral evidences clearly support the
latest news of this proposed rail
road advance they also indicate
pretty plainly that Harriman can
not preserve Central Oregon for
himself by stopping the Columbia
Southern at Madras, if the stop be
anything more than nominal. The
Bend country will have relief. If
Harriman does not supply it there
are those who will.

Proofs of Prosperity.
Oregon ian.
It i a productive year for "The Ore
Hon country." On the whole the most
productive and prosperous year it ha.
ever known. 01 some few productive
industcries the out put may fall short a
little of that of last year; hut on the
whole the results will be much greater.
"TheOreRon country" is the whole
region that flies the American flat;, north
of the forty-second parallel and west of
the Rocky mountains. Kvery part of it is
doing well. Kvery part of it feels the
impulse of new and vigerous movement.
It is turning out in the aggregate, far
greater amounts of all products than at
uuy former time,
Oregon is getting ahead, and Wash
ington is getting ahead, and Idaho is
L-ettliic ahead, and Alaska, that was not
part of the original Oregou country, but
Juts since been anm xcd. is getting ahead.
In this whole region of the Pacific North
west, settlers are arriving in rapidly in
creasing Jiumlwrs. We shall receive this
year 300,000 to take up permanent res
idence with us. They are clearing lands,
tlicy are building homes and planting
fruits, and rearing cattle and glowing
-wheat and mining gold and lifting coal,
and shearing sheep and catching fish,
ami flawing lumber and pushing railroad
extension
