As an example, The Bulletin
would deposit a ballot next Thurs
day reading as follows :
BONDS YES.
Dispose of under subdivision
31 of section 33S9
B v C. Code.
It should be remembered that the
authorizing of this bond issue of
$5,000 does not compel the school
board to issue bonds to that
amount. If $3,500 or $4,000 will
suffice to provide the desired build
ing the debt will be limited to such
sum.
Maybe the knockers arc right
and the Deschutes couutry is an
unbroken, worthless. hopeless desert.
But the visible evidence of success
ful farming the finest of crops of
all kinds, water in plenty flowing
cut and moistening thousands of
ertile acres, no failure anywhere
tends to shake confidence in the
udgment, if not in the integrity, of
these croakers. Where on the face
cf the earth will they find a new
-ountry that gives greater assurance
cf success? Mere ignorance or un
willingness to see the facts will not
prove the country worthless. The
country will speak for itself if they
will let it will eventually vpeak
fir itself anyway.

Remember the school bond elec
tion at the schoolbouse next Thurs
day afternoon. Only those who
had property on last year's tax roll
are entitled to vote. The qualifi
cations for voting at an ordinary
chool meeting will not suffice for
voting at the bond election. Vote
that would be eutirely proper at an
annual school meeting might in
validate a bond election, for only
those who pay taxes (as evidenced
by the last tax roll) are permitted
to vote on bonds. If one owns a
share in a partnership or corpor
ation which was on that tax roll he
may vote upon showing that he is
ihus qualified. The restrictions are
not made by the Bend school board;
they are the law as Interpreted by
the state superintendent. Vote on
the question whether $5,000 bonds
shall be authorized aud also say
whether the bonds, wheu author
ized, shall be disposed of under
subdivision 6 or subdivision 31 of
section 3389 of the Bellinger aud
Cotton code.
serve man,
There is more than irrigation in
this country, anyway a great dpal
more. We have billions of feet of
timber and an abundance of power
for manufacturing. Our livestock
interests are already large. No
railroad can get here so quickly
that it will not find iinraedintely ail
the business it can handle. But
such business won't come aud tie
itself up and sit and wait for trans
portation. Fools don t push out so
far from the metropolis.
