That is nn important develop ment project whioh Demi people arc organizing in the vicinity of l'rine villc. It difTers from most of the reclamation enterprises in that but a sum 11 part of the ground to be covered is still government domain. It is not, strictly speaking, desert land. Hut the productive power of this laud will be vastly increased by the introduction of water and the private interests affected etui well afford to put the project through. If the wagon raid com.p.tuv, which will be so greatly benefited, will encourage the improvement, it is practically certain of success. The soil of those lauds is deep and rich, a reliable market is at hand and the growth of this country Central Oregon iti as certain as auvthiug I in hitman affairs can be. There is no safer fftld for investment, no better place for a home. PROGRESS NOTI3S, River Ranch Wonted. And if others capnot tell you about it tir thing a bit yqurelf and vou will be Mtrprisctlat the result. Senator Mitchell's plea in abate ment was overruled by Judge Bel linger. Of course the $aine ruling v. ill apply to all qthers who entered that plea. Now the indicted states men will have -a chance to go to trial on their merits. unless they en dig up further technicalities. Now comes an intimation that the D. I. & ?. Co. wjll soon put on the reclamation work near Bend a larger construction force than ii has yet had. T-here is no official confirmation, of this, but it is known that land sales recently have greath surpassed expectations and it is pointed out tliqt there must be swift progress with the canals and ditches in order to water the laud As fast as people want it. Land sales produce large revenue and will carry the construction work forward qn a very extensive scale. There never was a time when o much improvement work was in progress in Bend as now, notwith standing a kind of dullness pro duced by reducing djtcli construc tion crews. There has been more cnsiructton ot ouituings at one time, but now in addition to that activity there is work in other branches,- water works, tele phones, sidewalks, street clearing, improvement of private premises, . etc. We arc balancing up our dc , ftopntcnt, which grew to be some Khat lop-sided during the wiuter. The scrip" law of March 4, 1905, has had the effect of booming i few favored scrips the Santa I;e, Washburn and one or twd others the base of which had been relin quished under agreement with the M.-cretary of the interior. The law doc not specifically say that other scrips, ussed on perfected entries., shall not be competent to take lieu land, but there is some ambiguity about it and the only scrips that seem to be entirely above suspicion are those first mentioned above. Others may go, or they may en counter trouble. Guaranteed foreM reserve scrip now brings S7 an acre, koldier's additional 6,25, and hcrip that will take non-timbered laud is worth ?6, So the new law was not such a bad Ihing for the big scrip heller. Building and Improvement Work at And In Vicinity of Hend, This week Jack Sheridan had five acres of ground plowod at his homestead in 18-13. The removal of many trees and stumps from streets and allexs in I the central part of town greatly im proves the appearance of things. Among tins week's accessions to the Deschutes land are YV. A Miller and Mert Sheets, of Atlantic. Iowa, who have taken seven forties of irrigated land north of town. M. J. Morrison has just com pleted a neat four-room, full frame cottage on the riter front at the southerly end of Garden Row near the bridge and the family is settled in the new dwelling. Iv. A. Sather has begun thi con struction of a 16x40 foot one-story :fl auuiuon on ine norm Mue 01 ins general store on 'all street. The new room will be used for a line of J hardware, sash and doors apd oils and paints. The Betid band hall, 18x34. at the Corner of Tenth street and Greenwood avenue, has been fin- Lishedand is now occupied by the band. Temporarily, the band has held its practice meetings over Mutzig'fi store. Mrs. Eva A. Steele this week began construction of a two-story frame structure on Wall street be- tween the Merrill drugstore and The Bulletin office. It is 14x24 on the ground. For a time it will be used chiefly as a dwelling and rooming house. L. H. McCann has this week finished plowing and seeding about six acres at his homestead in , 19-12. He has sowed the ground to alfalfa and field peas. He has radiihes and new onions that will Ik- ready for market in a short 1 time. These are raised on unirri-! gated laud, Through 1 6. Miles of Snow. George Finlcy and wife, of Craw, fordville, and a party of 1 1 other persons, to men and three women in all, crossed the Cascade range aver the Sautiam route from Litiu county, reaching Bond yes'erday iftcr ix days' travel. They came) through snow for 16 miles on the summit, some of it four feet deep., Tlitv had four teams with hacks and found it nectisary to remove the wheels from the vehicles and ' mount the beds on runners, The now was so deep that the men hud to break the trail for tin teams for many miles, Those people are on their way to the vicinity of Christ mas Lake, where they have taken desert claims.
