If the democrat party has not sold out to the tnqney kings anil the trust grabbers nothing has happened in 'politics or business this year. j Marion county (or Uncle John tMinto) is already counting on the .addition to the tax roll that will come from extension of the Corval lis & Kastcrn railroad over the range to Bend. He proposes first to open a wagon road through Mihto pas, and says the railroad will be sure to follow. Let it conic. They arc getting things into a pretty tuess down in Portlund. The police service of the town was lax and certain citizens organized U improve it. They brought an ac tion against the chief of police and other police authorities to compc! them to do their duty. And uow the supreme court has had the tem erity to decide that the chief of po lice must do his duty, even to tic extent of arresting notorious gam blers. If a chief of police is not tc have the privilege of protecting hi.1 friends and harrassing his encniie? Where's the fun of being chief? Mr. Ncwcll's condemnation o hCarcy law reclamation enterprise rs "more, for selling stock nm bonds than for watering lands" i? too sweeping. It is a reckless gen eralization, that an officer at the head of the irrigation service of tin goverment ought, not to be guilt of. Doubtless Jus characterizatioi fits many of the irrigation projects fits 'em like a mustard plaster But will Mr. Newell please point t some field of human endeavor that' has not its birdsof prey, its purMte its frauds? Even political science or scientific politics, has its blemish-' es. To judge the whole body bj those defective members h not wise There is no doubt that conscientiou work for the reclamation of ark lands is being done under the Care) ,lpw, and, to lc specific, it is bein done right here in the Deschute fouujtry. Mr. Newell should visit the I?e.s,chutes valley and becom informed. - Debating 'Society Meets Officer.
