FRIDAY
JULY 3, 1904
Will somebody please Rive J upiter
Pluvious a hunch Hint this is nit arid
country and his present treatment
of us is very, very unreasonable
indeed?
The great question that is agitat
ing the democrats this week is Who
shall lend the piccession thut is
forming for the march to the cem
etery? It will probably be Palmer
but it ought to be Hearst.
The official canvas of the returns
of the recent election shows the Re
publican plurality to be over 24,000.
Supreme Judge Moore received a
plurality of 24.217, and J. W. Bailey
24,283. Local option carried by
3 1 1 8, and the primary law by 39.85
Hermann's plurality was 6S13, and
Williamson's 14,353. The total vote
of Oregon was 99,3 1 5, against 92,
920 two years ago.
FAME THROUGH ADVERTISING.
The advertising columns of The
Bend Bulletin are read every
where, as witnesses the following
pertinent remark of the Prineville
Journal:
A. Male ta the name of ft contractor t4 tartl."
r at Html. Mr. Nle nt(ht nut to cxtritic
in; iWfceat) in hitting fcliaaclf m the hm4.
Mr. Nalc dosen't hit himself on
the head but he struck a good busi
ness location when he came to Bend.
Another testimonial to the efficacy
of advertising in The Bulletin is
nffordod by the fact that last week
a young lady lost a whip and order
ed an advertisement for it but re
covered the whip even before the
paper went to press.
BUTS ON COLUMBIA SOUThURN.
The interview with F. T. Hurl
burt, printed in The Bulletin last
week, to the effect that the Colum
bia Southern railway would never
extend beyond Sliauiko, has drawn
from a responsible man, who does
not desire personal notoriety in con
uectiou with the matter, the follow
ing; A CHANCH l'OK KNOWING ONKS.
From $1,000 to 5,000 deposit
ed with the editor of The Ileud
Bulletin on or before August 6, as
a waftcr tlt the Columbia South
ern railway will not be extended in
to Crook county before August 1,
1905, will be covered at once."
The Bulletin 1ms assurance of the
bona fide character of this oflfer and
vouches for its gemiineno&e. A certi
fied check ia offered to cover any
sum within the limits named.
AS TO COMMUl'liO IJOMBSTBADS.
The new circular issued by the
general laud office at Washington,
under date of January 25 but pro
mulgated in the pat few weeks,
makes a material change in the re
quirements for homestead commuta
tion. Formerly the requirement
was for "actual settlement, improve
ment and cultivation for not less
than six months preceding dale of
proof." The new requirement is
for "actual residence, improvement
and cultivation for not less than 14
months from date of settlement."
A peculiar incident is that the laws
under which the new requirement
is made were all on the statute
books three years before issuance of
the former circular, July 11, 1899,
but they appear to have lieeu
overlooked when the regulation,
which lias been the law all the time,
isbrought into effect , and commuters
look upon it as something of a
hardship. This is not so radical as
would appear at first view, howev
er! in the light .of the statuiiut that
"constructive residence from the
date oi entr will be recognized
where settlement is made within
six months therofter."
Rnstmisscn'a Goods Arc Sale.
M. V. Hawthorn, of Roslnnd,
writes to The Bulletin, as follows;
"1 notice you have published
an account of some one breaking
into and robbing N. C. Rasmus
sen's cabin on Hig River. When I
was up in the mountains I found
the board that he nailed over
his door off and the staple drawn.
Mr. Rasmusseii hud asked me
to look out for his things last Kelt
ruary and said he would pay me
for my troubl". You can state
that by his (RMmiSN-'n's) request,
I took everything and have it at
my place, stored away, atul the
same will be turned over to the
authorities when called for."
