b , t: ' TOPULAI OCBAN UOACII, Mnny from the Interior Planning tp Spcnv! tliclr Vocation nt tho cn Shore, Hundreds from Knstcrn Oregon and Washington spent their vaca tion nt North (Long) )cach, Wnslf iiiiitoti Inst suinmcr, and it is safe to say thnt this popular resort of the North ruciltc Coast will be vis ited by many more this year than ever within its history. The change from a high nntl dry interior alti tude to the sea level is most beneficial, The trip on the Willamette and Columbia rivers, out of Portland, is one long to be remembered; the usual heat of n summer afternoon Ixjlng tempered by a gentle breeze freighted with the aroma of pine trees and seasoned with salt air. AilU a?)..! IV I J UlHVt3 tlllllll tit tit, C beautiful. Leaving Portland on one of the Oregon Railroad & Naviga tion Company's palatial river steam ers, (the T. J. Potter bcitig queen of river flyers) the excursionist is carried through the harbor where jly the flags of many nations. The twelve miles on the Willamette nrc quickly made, and, after saluting the government lighthouse, mark ing the junction of the two rivers, .the boat swings into the Columbia for the trip down stream. The morning is clear (generally so from June until September), and a mag iiificcnt and inspiring sight meets ,thc eye as the sweep around the bend is made fiye snowcnpcd peaks, Mount HflQd, Mount Adams, Mount Saint IIoloii, ifotint Rainier and Mount Jefferson, looming into .yicw a sigh worth travelling thousands of miles to sec. On ,t)own the picturesque river, past villages, sawmills, fishing fleets, salmon canneries, perpendicular basaltic bluffs, and pretty side hill tanns, tiie uoat pursues its way. The majestic sweep of the river is , awe inspiring. Gradually the shores grow farther apart and, scarcely realizing that five hours have been consumed iu making the trip, the boat steams alongside the wharf nt Astoria. One hour from Astoria, through the famous fishing waters of the Columbia, past scores of salmon traps and nets and as many white winged fish boats, lands the pas sengers at Ilwaco, on Baker's Hay, where connection for beach points is made with the Ilwaco Railway & Navigation Company, whose cars stand on the wharf awaiting the steamer. North Beach, where surf bathing is unexcelled, at low tide is from 200 to 400 feet wide, 23 miles long and so compact that a carriage or wagon scarcely leaves a trace upon it. Scattered along the beach arc hundreds of cottages and hotels in which summer life in a un ceasing round of pleasure from the opening until the clost of the s-ja-bon. The much dreaded "Resort Mosquito" is unknown and no ven omous snakes or insects are found. The thermometer rarely goes above 80 degrees in July or August, but light overcoats, fires morning and evening and blankets at night arc comfortable during the season. Rates for accommodations nt North Beach points arc reasonable and vary to suit the visitors. At European hotels and lodging houses rooms range from 25 cents to one dollar a day; at restaurants, meals run from 25 to 50 cents; nnd at American-plan hotels, the charges range from one dollar a day to two dollers and upward. Dozens of delightful side trips may be taken from the beach into a country wild and picturesque beauty, quiet and secluded among hill and forests, with hunting and fishing iu native haunts; to the United States Life Saving stations and lighthouses, cranberry farms, oyster beds, sal men fishing grounds and canneries. For particulars about the trip to North Beach ask the nearest O. R. & N. agent, or send two cents in stamps to A. L. Craig, general passenger agent, Portland, for "Restful Recreation Resorts", which tells all about the Columbia River summering places. Martin Pratt, who spent several weeks in Bend last year, returned last week and is engaged with the surveying crew on the upper canal project of the D. I. & P Co the old Hutchinson project. He was previouly with the engineering force of the Columbia Southern railway and for a short time was on the automoble Hue near Bolter's. NOTICE FOR PUBLICATION.
