The Thomas Arnold ranch in 15
and 16-10 was sold in the past' week
to Dr. M. V. Turley and Merrill Van
Tassel, of Weston, and CharlcsOist,
of Ukiah. It included 480 acres of
land with ordinary farm bindings
and a third interest iu the Arnold
Awbrey-Pryrcar irrigation ditch.
The purchase price was $5000.
Dr Turley enrne in last week to
look over ditch lands. His atten
tion was drawn to the Arnold ranch
and n brief examination convinced
him that it was just what he and
his friends wanted. He made n
bargain for the pnerty nud went
back to Umatilla, returning a few
days later with Messrs. Gist and
Van Tussel. They were pleased
with the place and the deal was
closed. They left Tucsduy to re
turn to Umatilla county. Mr. Gist,
who already has disNscd of his
interest there, will move in at once
willi his family and goods ami 35 to
in head of fine cattle. The others
will close up their affairs at WuMou
and come to the Dcschutus within
the coming two to three mouths.
Mr. Arnold has two other much
c this side the range but both are
rented and he cannot get posuMiou
of them, lie will move with his
family to lictid and engage in car
paltering until he can get one of
the rented farms to move onto.
The new coiners are undettitoo.l
to have agreed to take ifio acres
tach of the Arnold ranch, thus
holding separate ranches rather
than holding it all iu common,
Tlie water rights in-quired with tae
ranch are ample for alt ag'ri.ultural
Uses.
Dr. Turley will live on his ranch
and will also practice his profession.

Lsit Monday morning the saw
mill of the Pilot Iluttc company
was started up, A few logs were
sawed to tet the machinery, aad
everything worked well, excerpt that
the main driving U-lt stretched a
little. That was expected of a new
belt. The stretch was taken ont by
n few days work ami the mill is
now giving perfect satisfaction. It
suned 15,000 feet of lumber yester
day without the edgcr. When the
edger shall be in operation the saw
ing capacity of the mill will be
doubled.
Foreman Dorrnnce says he no
tices n material improvement in the
quality of the lumltcr now cut over
that turned out from the old mill
before it was up to the flume. The
titular is taken from u little farther
up the river and the difference iu
quality is surprising.
The platting mill is not yet ready
for ocratioii. Doth it and the
edgcr will soon be set to work.
A new water wheel for the Steidl

After the new water wheel shall
