The Thomas Arnold ranch in 15 and 16-10 was sold in the past' week to Dr. M. V. Turley and Merrill Van Tassel, of Weston, and CharlcsOist, of Ukiah. It included 480 acres of land with ordinary farm bindings and a third interest iu the Arnold Awbrey-Pryrcar irrigation ditch. The purchase price was $5000. Dr Turley enrne in last week to look over ditch lands. His atten tion was drawn to the Arnold ranch and n brief examination convinced him that it was just what he and his friends wanted. He made n bargain for the pnerty nud went back to Umatilla, returning a few days later with Messrs. Gist and Van Tussel. They were pleased with the place and the deal was closed. They left Tucsduy to re turn to Umatilla county. Mr. Gist, who already has disNscd of his interest there, will move in at once willi his family and goods ami 35 to in head of fine cattle. The others will close up their affairs at WuMou and come to the Dcschutus within the coming two to three mouths. Lsit Monday morning the saw mill of the Pilot Iluttc company was started up, A few logs were sawed to tet the machinery, aad everything worked well, excerpt that the main driving U-lt stretched a little. That was expected of a new belt. The stretch was taken ont by n few days work ami the mill is now giving perfect satisfaction. It suned 15,000 feet of lumber yester day without the edgcr. When the edger shall be in operation the saw ing capacity of the mill will be doubled. Foreman Dorrnnce says he no tices n material improvement in the quality of the lumltcr now cut over that turned out from the old mill before it was up to the flume. The titular is taken from u little farther up the river and the difference iu quality is surprising. The platting mill is not yet ready for ocratioii. Doth it and the edgcr will soon be set to work. A new water wheel for the Steidl &Rccd mill is now on the way in from Shuuiko. After the new water wheel shall x installed the company will use the old wheel to run the planer, which will be in a separate build ing to be erected about 200 feet be iow the sawmill. Mr. Jasper has been for a considerable time think ing of using an auto for traveling about -the interior of Oregon..
