SJion ,. City itsdf (near Chicago) litis just .gone into receivers' Mad ud iujih it in the person of John vEj '-Alexander Dowi is cast down. iy , J Wt hopr the rumor that the Ore- gon Irrigation Company will begin A nctiv construction on a. l,rg scale v in the spring is well founded. We this $1 want active development in country and cannot have too much of it. There was but one verdict in the .recent organ ca. no umncr now A iniany picces'of paper wen: bigncd ( " 'by the foreman of the jury. The tr real xerdict was delivered and read : , in open court and assented to by the jury in the presence ,of both it parties to the controversy. There was no question about it. Does ,4' anybody for an instaut suppose the J jury would have thus assented in court to a verdict directly contrary to what it agreed to in the jury ' Toon? It is impossible. r j; It was a rather ghastly joke on Congressman Williamson the ap- ' pearancc of his amazing letter on , Moody's indictment in the very , issue of his country papers that carried the news of Moody's triumphant vindication. The Hul letin was too good a friend of Mr. Williamson to make use of that letter. The Bulletin sometimes -differs with people, but it fights fair, and we cannot believe Mr. Williamson's letter was intended for publ ication. Now 'Postmaster Btihcroft, ofl Portland, is in trouble because in spectors found his I O U's for about $900 in place of good coin of the realm in his official money box. Politics in Oregqn is getting to have quite a keen edge, thank you. Hut every federal office holder in Oregon has ample notice that the greatest advantage will be taken of any lapse on his part and he is en titled to no sympathy if inspectors do come when he least expects them. Be virtuous and you will be happy, though lonesome. Secretary of State Dunbar lias just made a fresh compilation in pamphlet form Of the election laws of Oregon, giving those iu effect May 21 last. This Compilation givos all laws relating to the dtta and authority of the judg o'f . . . J . J Ui election, but omits many statute of purely local application and those relating to canvass of votes by county clerks, contests, resignations etc, which arc easily found in the code and would make the pamphlet too bulky. This work is well done, as is everything under the hand of "Secretary Dunbar. The project of I. II. McCann and his associates to try for an arltisinii well in the northeastern pnrtof'to-12 cnlindt be too Highly commended. It is true that 'the geological structure of the country is not such as to'feife groat promise 'of success, but we Have no knowl edge as to how 'deep the broken strata go and it is iuore than possi ble that the drill may go through them to the continuous sheets of 'rock and find water that will at 'least come within pumping distance of the surface. This is prospecting hn an unknown field. The govern 'uieift' should join in the project and ipay.pa'rt'of the -expense from the Kr-EH. giv u the: men In their effort to discover and nmkc Inmefidul uie 6f the native resources Crook county is saved .sevcrnl hundred dollars by the decision of the feutiiiirities not to hold a special "(election to fill the sent vacated Ity Congressman Williamson when he went to Washington in this way it saves more than its share of the coat of the txtra session 'of the tarisliiture. or course the mere refusal of the political organizations to make nominations would not prevent an election, but an under standing with the governor was. arrived at whereby the governor will permit the county authorities to ignore his proclamation Tor n speciu! election if they choosu. In this way local sentiment is permitt ed to govern.' At the snme time the counties that chooso to go thus unrepresented a; the special sess'ou will have, no cause to resist payment of any tax levy the special session nmv provide' for. Conditions in Grunt, klnmnth ami Lake arc the same as in Crook. It would not jmy to hold n special election for n senator to serve a few days. This opinion also prevails in Clatsop and Polk which will go without full repre sentation in the senate at the special session to met December 2 1 . What possible gain to people of this locality is to come from hostile criticism and misiepreseututiou of the acts and purposes of the Pilot Hutte Development Company? What if we do not like some of its methods? It is a busiuefts enterprifc that is using its own money and nroniikes to I by far the most important factor iu devel opment of this region. If it should fail or abandon the country, as a few scum to desire, who at llend or in Crook county would be any bet ter for it? No business, falluro benefits anylwly but the jcsor or assieuee. 1 ins concern is not ask ing for help, it is not asking the people to supply funds or credit, it is not working up fake booms. In ded, it is rathur to the other ex treme of conservatism. It pays it way and in making pfogreiw. It could and probably would move faster if there were not so much bushwhacking against it. It is complying with the law, nunc of its rights have expired, it has the strength necewary to carry iw work to successful conclusion. The sen sible thing for the community to do is to help along every agency of development and advancement. Everybody will be benefited b such a policy.
