one of the batters who made any

Congress met in extra session,
last Monday. Joseph G. Cannon,
of Illinois, was chosen speaker of
the house, in accordance with a
foregone conclusion. Congressman
Hermann is to be pressed for ap
pointment on the river and harbors
committee and Williamson for the
irrigation committee. The bill for
admission of New Mexico to state
hood is No. 1 in the house. In the
senate Hanna, Mitchell and Gor
man were the recipient; of many
flowers. Senator Mitchell intro
duced a bill to appropriate $2,15,
000 for the Lewis and Clark fnir.
There is no doubt that the Cuban
reciprocity treaty, for the consider
ation of which the extra session
was mainly called, will be confirmed.
