The stngc business appears to keep up to high-water mark right along. Hoth lines appear to have all that can be attended to without risk of breakdowns, in both passen ger and express traffic. It is noth ing umihtnl to hee a so-pound bar rel of sugar set in the center of the stage, to balance things. This, along with two or three passengers and two well-filled mail ponchos and a bundle of paper, with a couple of hundred of excess bag gage .strapped on behind, makes a 'very considerable load. It is no longer a matter of wonder why n stage wears out before its time. May Hulld In Horn!. R, n. An extensive programme was rendered in very good .stylo, but owing to the hot weather the audience was limited. This office was presented with complimentary tickets but owing to pressure of businesb the office force was reluc tantly compelled to stay nt home and work. The receipts from the sale of tickets 'amounted to the reg ulation 15 cents. Wildcat Clubbed to Dentil. A bobcat was brought in yester day morning by two young men working for the Columbia Southern Irrigation Company. They were driving in to liend for supplies and discovered the animal perched in a pine tree just south of Awurey imtte. They threw rocks nt him until he was crippled and fell to the ground, and then finished his earth ly caicer with clubs. Miss Jackie Hrock is visiting;! Miss Mnud Vaudovert at Lava this week. Carlisle Triplett wont to Prine ville this morning for a two days' business visit. IJditor Schlccht of the Kcbo left for Prineville on this morning's stage, to 1 gone oror Sunday. V. A. I.aidluw cunt up from Portland yesterday uveuiug, and will make a prolonged stay in the neighborhood. James Hunter and Mrs. Sarah R. Hunter left Monday morning for a trip to the Willamette vnlley, going over the mountains. Mist, Hhuicho Kever has place nt the house taken Mrs. Hunter's, P. IJ. V. Co. boarding. Hrokor's Deschutes Hand is pro gressing finely. The member are indefatigable in thoir studies and some of them are showing great promise. Horns can be heard al most any evening as the scales arc being practiced iuduilrjously, and the tone work is excellent. G. I. Robinson and bis four sons, of Hnrdmait, Morroy county, were in liend overnight Tuesday, leaving next morning for Cnlifprnin. Mr. Robinson and his sotu were among the Heppuer sufferers, having been nt that ploce on June 15, when the disastrous waterspout occurred. A warm fiie has been more of n necessity than a luxury this week up to yesterday morning, when it turned off wurm ognin.. Tins does not sound very wall for August weather, even at an riltitiule of 3000 feet; nevertheless we. are grateful to the obliging weather clerk nt this point for not permitting it to snow. The Rend Mercantile Compihiy has during the past week received nu elegant stock of glassware and porcelain, a Stock Unit v e doubt could be surpassed by any house in Central Oregon. t he, unpacking, checking, markings arranging, etc., occupied the attcutiQugf two men fbr an cutirc day. Ajbig stock of lumbermen's goods also is now 011 exhibition at the store. Bill Armstrong came up from Prineville Tuesday evening. Hill said he didn't like iiend any mote, and went tack to town the next tiny. The giants from the athletic field will meet at Portland during the big fall carnival, September 14 to 6, and lovers of athletic events will have an optortunity to see the big big fellows contest for prizes. lid Iloyd left for Prineville on Saturdays stage. Hi ultimate destination is some jxiint in South ern California. Mm. iioyd, whoc health has improed wonderfully in the last few weeks, will follow him as far as Prineville tomorrow. Charles Stauhurrough has had several acres of land on his home stead cleared up preparatory to fail plowing and seeding. John Cottor and liar I Reed did the work for him. In a year or two this place will be a smiling field of alfalfa The bridge across the Dwcbutes at the Palmer ranch is completed. The contractor, Milt Young, n.s sUlod by William Stevens, did a very good job on this structure, which is among the lxust of the many bridges spanning the river. This bridge was built for $130. The Reception Saloon, Shaniko, I offers the most tempting induce ments to timber locators going into the woods. The vervbeat brands of whiskies, auch as Cyrus Noble, Old Pepper, Hunter Kaltimore Rye apd other standard goods, always j ,0 l,Btl uer- Call at the Recep tion Prcd Anderson, J. P. Johnson, T. M. Arthur and Ceorge II. Carl ton, of Duluth, Minn., were at the ; Pilot Huttc Inn on Sunday. These igenUemeu comprised a "personally ! conducted" timber excursion, with Hyron Cady as conductor, very evident that all the laud is not included in the It is timber recent withdrawal. M. K. Lally, who has been in the vicinity of Beud for the past mouth, left for a visit to Shaniko yesterday morning. His home is in Chippe wa Palls, and he is a timber scaler of experience, having been em ployed by many Hnstcrti lumbering Anns in that capacity for the past 34 years. Mr. I, ally has had some difficulty over a timber claim, and hence hts visit to Heud. There will be a grand ball on Priday evening, Sept. 4. at West's i hall It is to be given under the auspices of Hroker's Concert Hand, and the proceeds are to be applied to the purchase of n bass drum for the baud, an instrument that or ganization is sorely in need of. 1 lixcellent music will be furiiishod by Kennedy's orcliestra for the oc casion and every indication jwiuts to a splendid time and a healthy attendance. J. Pauchald, of Minot. N. Dak., was in Heud a few days of last week. Mr. Pauchnkl failed to get a timber claim he wns after and was plainly uissatisneil witli tlte (.ountrv here. The timber didn't SHjt him. the soil was too sandy to cultivate, with or without water; the fish refused absolutely to lot him catch them, and the weather was so beastly hot. He preferred the magnificent plains of North Dakota, he said, and left for the same Monday morning. Out of Heud on Saturday last went the new office wagon and the cook wagon of the Columbia South ern Irrigation Company, which have tweu building here in the P. H. D. 'Co. lumber yrd. Kach is a well constructed affair, made of fine dressed flooring half-way to the top and finished with heavy white duck for the upper half and the roof. Hy this time they ore doubtless ver itable ships of the desert, and as handy to the workmen on the west side of the Tumello as the proverb iul pocket in a shirt. The buildimj of two chimneys one for the Pilot Huttc Inn and the other for the liend Mercantile Com jwuy is scheduled to commence in a few days. The material to be used is tuff, the soft volcanic rock underlying the country and which has heretofore been called sillar by residents. The rock is being cut up into convenient size by means of n blunt saw, and by this method the chimneys will probably cost a little less than if built of brick and nt the same time they will just as enduring, and as acceptable to the insurance companies.
