not believe that the canal can bo con

will give them nil tho opjiortunlty they
deslru to prepare for comiHitttlon.
They lelievu this Is cheaper than to

Thinks an Appropriation of $1,000,000
by Congrcas Not Too Much to Ask
f-or-AII Delegations from Coast
States Should Work to That find
Oregon Decerning Better Known.
Tacoma, Wash,, Aug. 6. Unltod
States Brnntor Addison G. Foster
pledged his supjiorl today to an appro
prlstion of 11.000,000 for the Lewis
and Clark exposition and strongly
urged the co-operation of Oregon and
Washington congressional delegations,
not only for tho purpose of securing
this appropriation, but also for aiding
river and harbor work and other North
westinterests. Henator Foster accepts it as a matter
of course that the roast representatives
will aid tho Orcogn delegation in secur
ing a big appropriation for tho Lewis
and Clark exposition. J!e regards the
exposition as nn enterprise of equal
Interest to both Washington and Ore
gon and of industrial value.
"Oregon has dono exceedingly woll
In behalf of tho Lewis and Clark fair."
said Henator Foster today. "I doubt
If there Is another city on tho Pacific
coast wl.ers over M00, 000 could 1
rained by private subscription. It Is
doubtful, too, whether any other coast
slate than Oregon would appropriate
1000,000 to encourage the exposition.
Mien enterprise la worthy of encourage
ment. "Tho exposition will be of great
value to tho eutlro Northwest and will
aid In tho development of thn whole
coast. Tho co-operation of neighbor
ing states should bo hearty and effect
ive. "I have net bad any opportunity of
discussing tno exposition with other
senators and I do not know bow n re
quest for it 1 1,000,000 annroprlation
would bo received. Wat it Is certain
the fair will not receUe this recog
nition unless Oregon asks for It.
"Tho federal government has boon
exceedingly liberal with St. Louis. It
romouibernd tho expositions at Atlanta,
New Orleans, Nashville, Chicago nnd
alaowhera in n generous mannor. It is
hard to understand how Portland's
efforts cnji fall to he encouraged. The
Lewis and Clark exposition has a his
toric value that i only secondary to
tho Louisiana Purchtuo exposition.
"Tho people of America now thor
oughly appreciate the value of the
'Oregon country' and tlio great value of
tho work that saved it to the United
fitato. It Is especially fitting that the
tOUth anniversary of tho arrival of the
intrenld explorers, Lewis and Clark,
should bo observed. "
