FRIDAY
JUNE 19, 1903
The dreadful disnstar nt Heppucr
seems to have been unnvoid
nWe by any human agency or fore
sight, unless it may be said Unit the
site of the town was not wisely se
lected. Hut towns like Hcppner,
like our social system, are of gradu
al growth, not the product of n de
liberate plan. Like most such
things it had it weak points, one
of which was that it was so situated
as to bo at the mercy of a mountain
torrent. Many towns are no better
located. That such a catastrophe
should overwhelm the place was
not to be expected. Like all con
vulsions of nature, when it came it
held sway, and left in its track the
rum of a city and hundreds ot
corpses to tell of whole families
blotted out in an hour. It was
merciful in that it did its worst
work quickly, but there is misery
enough to call for substantial efforts
of relief from the more fortunate
sister communities.
Joseph Chamberlain has lived up
to his reputation for "driving to the
brink and then turning his team
skillfully around and driving back
safely." There is little more to be
said about the matter, except that
Premier Balfour hns won lasting re
nown as a statesman of the highest
order simply by keeping quiet at
the right moment, and that the per
plexing problems of a protective
tariff for" Great Britain have been
unceremoniously bundled into the
background of British politics for a
long term of years. England is as
devoted to "no change" in her fis
cal adjustments as the United States
is to hers, though each differs rad
icallj' from the other. Both are
prospering under their respective
schedules and "changes" are as
dangerous as they are altogether
unnecessary. England has found
this out in time; the United States
did not.
To those who attended the an
nual school meeting Monday after
noon comment on the proceedings
is superiluous and useless. Those
who shirked their duty will refuse
to see any lesson in it. But to
sober minded citizens the matter
has a serious aspect that neither
cheap impertinence nor studied aui
mostly can hide. The sacrifice of
the school is too great a price for
factional advantage. We wonder
if any sane person is proud of Mon
day's exhibition?
freedom.
Sudden Death of Mrs. Donkcl,
Idu M., wife of S. I. Donkel,
died suddenly alxmt 2 o'clock Tues
day morning. Her heart was wank
and a regurgitation from the stom
ach while she wn&asleop filled the
trachea and caused suffocation.
Mr. Donkel was awakened by a
sound like snoring. He at once
perceived that something was
wrong with his wire ami tried to
ratine her. This attempt was un
successful and he hastened to light
a lamp, but all was over in a few
minutes and the patient, who had
apparently not wakened at nil,
slept the sleep of death. Dr. lid-
was hastily summoned, but there
was no use for his services.
Mrs. Donkel was Itom in Ohio
54 years ago uud there she married
Mr. Donkel. They moved west-
want to DesMohu. Iowa, where
they resided a number of years, and
lS years ago came west to Oregon.
Until about throe years ago they
lived in the Nehaleut valley, in
Columbia county. Then they came
to Crook county. They lived in
various jmrte of this county, com
ing to Bend from Lava within
the past year. Mr. Donkel
and five children survive the
wife and mother. The eldest child
is Isaac, who, with the youngest
three Ivn, Cleveland and Hlixa
beth made his home with the fam
ily just north of Bend. The second
son, Wallace, lives with his family
at Lava.
The funeral took place Wednes
day afternoon from the sclioolltottsc,
the Rev. O. W. Tripktt, of Prine
villc. officiating. Interment was in
the Bend cemetery, this being the
first grave there.
Mr. Donkel and the children ex
press the warmest gratitude for the
services and ministrations of neigh
bors and friends in the time of their
bereavement.

Postmaster Summers of Prine
ville has given it out that more mail
goes through his hands for Bend
now than was received for Princ
ville when he took charge of that
office six years ago. This is highly
gratifying to the citizens of Bend,
whp have for some time had visions
of a daily mail service on route
No. 73401, between Prineville and
Silver Lake. With two or three
pouches and a tie sack or two com
ing in on every stage, the daily run
cannot be withheld from us much
longer.
Pive hundred rabbits and one
coyote met death in the Hay Creek
neighborhood during the hailstorm
onday afternoon. The rabbits
were killed outright by the hail
stones and the coyote was knocked
down by them. A sheepman there
seeing the animal's predicament,
held a saddle over his head to keep
from getting killed himself, and
went out and clubbed the coyote to
death. In such wise do all the ele
ments conspire to do good to this
favored country.
A veritable cloudburst visited
Bend on Monday afternoon. Rain
came down in drops, strings and
sheets for about twenty minutes,
with an occasional flurry of hail
stones of the size and hardness of
marbles. Roads ordinarily dry be
came invisible in a moment, and in
their place were thick yellow tor
rents of rushing water, which dis
colored to a dirty brown the clear
ness of the Deschutes. A glance at
the rain gauge showed that 1.4-200
inches of precipitation had fallen in
twenty minutes. Little or no dam
age was done beyond loosening the
wall paper in some residences; at
least none hns been heard of. As
the river was perfectly clear above
1 Bend we infer that the storm was
purely local, or at least its violence
was spent at this place and to the
north. From the appearance of the
country beyond the Tumello Sun
day, however, there must havebecu
n similar storm there Saturdny,
wheu Bend had a very mild show
er. The week has been a notably
wet and thundery one.
In reply to the question,
"who pays the expenses of the
president's junketing trip?" Wil
liam Allen White says: "It is a
stocky built man with a ratty mus
tache, a font of double pica teeth,
and a jaw set with a Yale timelock;
man rather below medium height,
inclined to oe pussy, witn a voice
that needs a compositor a man
named Roosevelt T. Roosevelt, to
lw accurate. He is the first nresi
dent of the United States, in recent
years, who has refused all cour
testes trom uie railroads and pays
uis way, aim by tnc same token lie
is the first president in recent years
whom the railroads arc going to
fight."
