M Aw ■ mm This action will In no way change the measure upon which the people of the state will vote November 7. giving Portland authority to tax It self for the exposition. No tax is provided outside of Portland. The measure provides that the exposition shell be held In 1925. or ns soon thereafter aa it can be arranged, so that the authority from the voters of the state to make the special tax on Portland la required Just as before, regardless of the postponing of the time for holding the exposition. ■ After carefully considering all an gles. the exposition committee has decided that there te not sufficient time to create the greet exposition planned by 1925, and that two years additional will give opportunity to make It even more extensive then originally planned. While the state in general will vote on the proposal to give Port land permission to tax Itself, that city Itself will vote on a proposal to levy a tax of three million dollars at the rate of a million dollars a year, the first levy to be made after private subscriptions to the extent of one million «dollars have been raised. The exposition committee also has authorised immediate commencement tf the exposition is approved at tha November election, or an intensive advertising campaign for Oregon in which its attractions and opportun ities will be sent forth to the world, and which is to continue on through to the period of tha exposition. ---------- o — 19251 THE WORLD, PORTLAND Ü SIX TY YEARS A PRINTER 1987 REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS In the personage of Andrew J. Shrader who la Just completing his sixtieth year of continuous service on the case” la a printing estab lishment, ths Anderson Valley News lays claim to the employment of the oldest printer, la point of service. In California. Says tha News: "Although Shra der Is 72 years of age. he Is very efficient In his trade. It was on Sep tember 1, 1882. that ha began hlB career on the "Hartford-City Union" In Blackford county, Indiana, aa of fices "devil," but learning qulekly, he rapidly ascended the ladder and soon acquired a fair knowledge of the printer's craft. "He next worked on newspapers in Illinois and Wisconsin and latsr he went to Iowa where he established and conducted a newspaper for oyer twenty years. ~”T v ;; • >^ fr r ' ’ ’Some years ago Shrader moved to Oregon and worked on the Graphic at Newberg but late In 1920 he came to Anderson for the benefit of his wife’s health, and Joined the staff et this newspaper, where he la now oc cupied and expects to continue In the profession for some years to come. "During his long years of service Shrader has kept a copy of the first newspaper on which he worked. It contains tha first "stick" of type he ever set—-the platform of tha Union P*rty. ., “ There are many Interesting and historical incidents chronicled in the old paper. "For example: The market quo tations quote wheat at 80 cents a bushel, corn 25 cents, and oats SO cents. ‘ ‘In connection with the Civil War the paper says: A young soldier In Beauregard’s army named Ricks, of Baltimore, was shot for declaring he would not fire on the American flag. "It also says: As the Confederate army marched through Maryland 8tuart’s cavalry rode through the streets of Frederick with the stars and atrlpea tied to their horsee* tails and dragging the glorloua flag of their fathers la the dust. "There is also an essay by Horses Greeley on the front page and the paper la wholly an odd and Interest ing old document. J*The printing trade Is not an easy one sad to continue tn It continuous ly as long as Shrader la no small a complishment. He is entitled to the congratulations of his fellow crafts men. The best wishes of ths News is extended to the old gentleman and faithful employs.” ^ Mr. Shrader was at one time ei ployed on the Graphle. Ranna E. Atkinson to R. F.
