name in that it literally Is the birth­
place o f rainbows. Th e San Joaquin
flings Itsoif like s delicate curtain o f
lac* and silver more than 100 feet
over s ledge o f black basalt— a con­
tinuation o f the postplle, though with­
out the «d a m n s— Into aa abysmal box
canyon.
When the san’ s ray* reach
Into the fa iry box, rainbows arch the
mists that flood ths chasm— rainbows
so d e a r that color photographs regis­
ter them distinctly. The setting e f
this fall, in the bosom o f the virgin
ferast sad between exalted heights. Is
