The three bears, ‘Teddy," "Sil­
ver" and "Toby," were captured by
Bray in the west foothills of the
Coast range off the Tillamook road
a year ago last spring. Be turned
his dogs loose. They took up a
trail and treed one o f the bears, a
enb two months old. The other two
they treed together a little later.
The mother bears fled from the dogs,
leaving their cubs when the case
seemed hopeless. These bears now
weigh 250 and 300 pounds and are
trained« to do tricks and play with
the Bray children.
. The dogs and the bears do not get
along, of course. The dogs must be
kept chained or in their kennels at
all times, and the bears must be
kept chained.
To stage a big hunt, Bray turns
a bear loose, say at fl o’clock In the
evening. About 8 in the rooming
he (fees the dogs and puts them on
the trail, then 14 hours old. An
awful braying and soamperlng be­
gins.

Last spring Bray turned 27 doge
loose on one trail, and when he
came up the bear was composedly
holding them off,, bowling over those
that got too near. Somewhat differ­
ent from the terrified English fox;
Bfay was born in France but
came with his parents to America
when a slip of a boy. The first
home was in Ontario. Five years
ago he moved to Oregon.

“ When I was so high.” said Bray,
measuring about two feet from tbe
floor, "1 shouldered a gun and went
back into the woods along the Des
Moines river in Ontario, where we
hunted bear and moose. I could
hardly keep up without running.
Bray’s favorite banting grounds
for bear and deer in Oregon are
Grass Mt., Nestuck river and Cow
creek canyon above Roeeburg. All
his life he has made a practice of
working on the farm In the summer
and disappearing in the hills to
hunt in the winter, when the woods
are damp and the trails can be fol­
lowed.

rowly escaped death several times
in the filming of an automobile ac­
cident episode in ’’Saturday Nlgbt,”
Cecil B. DeMille’s lateet Paramount
picture, which will he the attraction
at the Baker Theatre next Wednes
day and Thursday, September 13 and
14. But the narrowest escape came
when Miss Joy stumblsd accidently
and fell on the railroad trestle a
hundred feet above the ground.
In this episode Miss Joy and Mr.
Mower attempt to cross a railroad
trestle in an automobile only to be
trapped mid-way across by an ap­
proaching electric train. In their
frantic efforts to escape they rush
far the distant end of the trestle.
Realising that 'this la Impossible.
Mower was to force Miss Joyce to
clamber over the edge -of the treatle
with him where the pair would hang
ended while the train rushed
above them, scrapping tbe automo­
bile.
While filming the scene In which
the trapped pair attempt to outrun
the train. Miss Joy stumbled over
one of the ties and fell, rolling with­
in. a few inches of the edge of the
trestle. Dlzsy from constant work
at that height and surprised by the
fail, she was powerless to htlp her­
self. Only good fortune saved her
from falling to certain death.
Although the stumble was purely
accidental, Mr. DeMille retained the
aefcne In the picture on the ground
that it was absolute realism. Con­
rad Nagel. Edith Roberts. Julia
Faye and Theodore Roberts have Im­
portant roles
