An In teresting feature will be tbe particlpa tiou of members of tbe Rappahannock tribe of Indians, actual descendants at tbe men with whom CapL John Smith, founder of Jamestown, concluded n treaty making possible the peaceable settlement of the land now occupied by Fredericksburg. Fredericksburg*! claim to historical distinction Is borne out by records. The Magazine of American History states that In 1570, 87 years before the founding of the first English col ony at Jamestown, "the first Christian shrine In America was built by Span ish missionaries on tbe spot now occu pied by Fredericksburg.” In 1671, by an act of “the Grande Assemblle” at Jamestown, tbe settlers of Fredericks burg were empowered to hold courts and administer justice. It Is the an niversary of that occasion that Fred ericksbnrg will celebrate, for It was not until 1727, nearly 50 years later, that tbe city was actually chartered by tbe bouse of burgesses at Wlllams- burg, and named for Frederick, prince of Wales, son of George II. Tradition holds that from hern went forth a declaration of In dependence that preceded the famous Mecklenburg declaration by 21 days. John Paul Jones, first admiral of the American navy, waa a citizen of Fredericksburg. So, too. waa Presi dent James Monroe, author of the Monroe doctrine.
