BERRY DEMONSTRATION
Don’t forget to attend the next
Farm Bureau meeting if you are in
terested in having the berry demon
stration for which plans are being
aaade. It is not certain that we will
have it unless quite a number ex
press themselves favorably. If you
cannot attend the meeting but want
to attend a demonstration, phone or
write me so we can get an idea of
how many are interested. '
Any time this month will be ideal
fo r observing several features o f the
berry business. First, we can see
how the canes have been pruned
better than we can later when the
foliage has become heavy. Second,
methods of cultivation can be stud
ied while the work is actually being
done.
In addition we can nste
methods o f wiring, kinds o f soil
adapted for different kinds and va
rieties o f berries, distance o f plant
ing. and the effects o f different kinds
o f fertilizers on leaf growth.
Later we can take another trip to
these same Helds when the berries
are ripe to investigate the effect o f
the various operations on the yield.
W e can then learn also the methods
o f harvesting the crop, and compare
yields of the different varieties of
the'same kind o f fruit.
Remember, this demonstration is
for everyone interested in the berry
industry, whether consumer or pro
ducer. Real estate men in particu
lar are Invited to take part in it for
the purpose o f making themselves
acquainted with actual conditions
out on the farm so they may advise
prospective buyers intelligently. A
large part of our berry plantings are
a big disappointment to the grower
fo r two reasons. In the first place
many people do not understand the
business. In the second place they
are wrongly advised. And in either
case failure is as likely as success,
with the result that our local berry
Industry gets a "black eye" quite
often.
W e have numerous successful
growers in this locality, and it will
b o our purpose to visit them as far
as possible. They w ill feel it an
honor to be called on and we will
«ndeavor to have them tell us where
in we have failed as well as suc-
«eeded.
As an illustration o f the uncer-
talnty that exists in the berry in-i
dustry, the writer has tested out
about 18 varieties o f berries during
the past ten years, and considering
market conditions and the nature of
his soil, has eliminated all but five
as being unprofitable. Were he to
move to a different location much of
this testing would have to be done
over again provided berries were not
being grown in that locality. Each
Kind of berry has its own require
ments as to soil. etc. On the other
hand there are many kinds of soil
not suitable for berries unless given
aome special treatment. Slope also
hasrconsiderable influence.
So if you have failed in the berry
