told by J. Morewood D ow sett, a well-
known big guiue hunter, who has Just
re lu m e d from a hunting trip in South
A frica.

W ith a native chief and a house hoy,
he sta rte d to find them. T h e p arty
cam e upon th e herd in th e forest.
Mr. D ow sett got several photographs
w ithin 20 y ards of the beasts when
the chief w arned him th a t they had
been “scented-’ and th at the anim als
w ere coming fo r them. S natching up
his rifle Mr. D ow sett shot and killed
the leader, a big bull.
W hile some surrounded th e ir leader
m any of the b easts stam peded, and,
running the w rong way, Mr. D ow sett
w as cut off from the party. R eload­
ing his gun. th e h u n ter dashed off for
safety and run Into a big bull ele­
p h an t which crashed through the bush
six y ard s in fro n t of him.
T ru n k aloft, e a rs extended and
trum peting wildly, th e J > e u s t rushed
a t Mr. D ow sett an d swept him to the
ground with his tru n k and tu rn ed rap­
idly in its own length ready to tram ­
ple him.
T he h jjn tej took ■ flying diva under
the m onster's belly, realising he would
then be on th e rig h t side of th e wind,
but th e b— st tu rn ed rapidly round and
again tried to tram p le him. Instead
the anim al rolled him over and over
w ith its legs and th e hu n ter saw above
him the tw o g reat tu sk s as th e b east
tried to m aneuver his body into posi­
tion and pick him up. Mr. D ow sett
m anaged to roll behind the anim al and
get to his feet and m ake a rush fo r
cover. T o th e h u n te r's relief and su r­
prise the furious b east set off in the
apposite direction and disappeared.
