Sheep probably suffer more than any
other kind o f live stock from para­
sites. They are practically Uunnino-
to tuberculosis, which Is one of the
serious ailments of cattle sad swine,
and amour sheep there la nothing
comparable to the devastating out­
breaks o f cholera among swine. Sheep
have comparatively few
bacterial
diseases.
Nevertheless, there Is A-
steady lose ot sheep In all parts of
the country and this loss Is mostly
dne to parasites.
I t is the sheep owners' business to
prevent disease rather than to attempt
to cure it after it has made its ap­
pearance.
While there are special
treatments for tbs various diseases
which makes it advisable* to call a
competent- veterinarian, there are a
number o f ways to prevent diseases
caused by parasites.
Among them
pasture rotation, use of forage crops,
feeding from racks or board floors,
draining or filling swamps, and pre­
venting wandering dogs from getting
Into the flock.

Parasites o f sheep are divided Into
two general groups, external and in­
ternal. Among the former, lice, sheep
ticks, and scab mites are the most
common. One application o f sodium
flourlde In the form of • powder
rubbed Into the skin will kill biting
lice, but not sucking lice. Both kinds
of lice, sheep ticks, and scab mites

For scab mites the official dips are
lime-sulphur and nlcotin-sulphur dips.
Arsenical dips are not well suited to
sheep dipping. A ll places which have
been occupied by lousy sheep should
be regarded as dangerous from this

if occupied by ticky sheep, as dan­
gerous for two montha; if occupied
by scabby sheep, as dangerous for a
month or two In the case of pasture*
and a year or more lr^ the case of
buildings. Quarantine measures are
eesentlal In eradicating scab.
The moat common Internal parasites
o f sheep include tapeworms, flukes,
roundworms, and a t/ n other forms
such as maggots causing grub in the
head, the tongue-worm and the one-
cel led protoaoa. One o f the moat com­
mon of these is the grub, Infestation
with which can be largely prevented
by smearing the neee o f the sheep
with a preparation made of equal
parts of tar and greaae, or tar and
Ash oil. Other Important Internal p a r­
asites discussed In the bulletin are
tapeworms, the gld pern si tee, hydatid,
liver flukes. Stomach worms, nodular
worms, hookworms, end lungwonns.
O f these, certain tapeworms are fair­
ly common over the entire United
States; one tapeworm occurs only in
the W est; gld la most prevalent In
Montana; liver flukes are most com­
mon In the Oulf states and the Pacific
Ooest states; stomach worms and long-
worms take a heavy toll In sheep in
almost every state In the Union, and
nodular worms and bookworms are
common In the South and Rest.
