THROWING MONET AWAY
AN OPINION FROM HILLSBORO
The Newberg Graphic seeks a solu
tion o f the problem which confronts
all towns within reach of a large
city, and says that while merchants
of that city complain that so many
people shop in Portland they are un
able to carry comprehensive stocks
the people answer that they buy
away from home because local mer
chants do not have what they want.
The Graphic will find, however, that
the solution rests with the mercha'nts
themselves, and they must solve it
just as Hillsboro solved It. We be
lieve it is a safe assertion that not
withstanding development of trans
portation facilities— frequent electric
trains and busses— a larger propor
tion of Hillsboro people shop at home
than they did when the town was
served by a couple of steam trains a
day. The answer must be that they
find what they want at home, and
probably the merchants, took a chance
to show them that they could. We
believe this is true along practically
all lin^s of business in this city. Not
so many years ago all- women’s ready
to wear garments worn in Hillsboro
were bought in Portland, but now at
least one exclusive business of this
nature is here and doing a large busi
ness. while other houses carry simi
lar lines. These dealery took a chance
and the people responded. Newberg
might do the some.— Hillsboro In
dependent.
There are more ways than one of
doing this unusual stunt. And in
fact after consideration, it is not
even unusual.
Nearly everyone is
ready to agree that the fellow who
squanders his money wantonly. Is
, throwing it away and they stand
ready to condemn him for It. but
many of us do the same thing in
other ways which are not perhaps
so apparent and often think our
selves exceedingly shrewd at the time.
As we consider the question, it occurs
to us that the number of ways in
" w h ic h money may be thVown away
are so numerous as to preclude meu-
tion. We presume that we have not
even heard of many of them, for al
most every day the press dispatches
bring to light a new one. However.
It has been called to our attention
that a young newly married man in
this community was guilty of throw
in g away almost 950 recently in a
way which we wonder if perhaps'
others in the community may not
also have done. This young man did
not know he was throwing that much
money away and perhaps does not
yet realize that he has done so. but
he did.

(Prepared by the United States Depart
ment of Agriculture.)
The necessity of a campaign o f un
varying efficiency against the common
brown rat. is an outstanding one. No
other animal or insect is so dangerous
and persistent an enemy, and no other
enemy succeeds in indicting the dam
age that the rat annually Imposes up
on humanity. The rat population of
the United States Is at least equal to
the human population, and the same
ratio holds true for practically every
country under the sun. The bureau
of biological survey. United States
Department of Agriculture, places the
value of the food and property de
stroyed annually by each Individual
rat at $2. Keeping well within the
boundaries of conservatism this means
that each year. In this country alone,
we produce $200,000,000 worth o f food
to no other purpose than to feed our
rats. In another way, 200,000 men In
the United States are devoting all
their Tabor to the maintenance o f 100,-
000.000 rats.
Is Efficient Germ Carrier'.
But the rodent’s enmity is far from
being satisfied by this huge economic
Injury. A frequenter of all the places
that are vile and loathsome, the rat
is a most efficient genu carrier. The
germs of the dreaded “black death"
have killed more human beings than
all the wars of the world’s history,
and. these genus are Introduced, Into
the human system by the bite o f a
rat flea. In India, no longer ago than
1806, the bubonic plague killed 9,000,-
000 persons. In Europe, during the
Fourteenth century. It Is believed to
have brought death to 25,000,000 hu
man beings. Other diseases, almost
as dreadful, are traced to the common
rat. Thus, from the. standpoint of
public health, as well as from the ne
cessity of controlling the drain upon
the public purse. It Is essential that
the rat be exterminated. Once the ex
termination Is complete, or as nearly
so as modern methods will permit«, ev
ery precaution must be taken to pre
vent the rat from multiplying and re
gaining lost ground.

ENGINE DISTILLATE
AGAIN ON MARKET
“ Engine distillate for use in trac
tors, motor boats and other similar
internal combustion engines, has
been placed on the market again,’’
anounces Mr. V. Delbert Miller, Spec
ial Agent of th^ Standard Oil com
pany, at this point. A large stock is
being carried to care for internal
combustion
engines
which
are
equipped to use this product. In the
past engine distillate has proven
quite satisfactory for special types
of engines, and its appearance again
on the market will mean a consider
able saving for tractor operators and
owners o f engines which can be
adapted to thiB fuel.
