M AY 19. 1921 IK MEMORIAM One week from next Tuesday will be Memorial Day— the day on which we are supposed to pay tribute to the ■ memory of those departed ones who have given up their lives in the ser vice of their country. We have seen this day celebrated in many places and in many #*ys. but there is only one right way to observe the occasion. The memory of those men and boys, who made the supreme sacrifice in the wars of the past that our nation might be a better place for future generations, is too sacred for any but the highest type of service— the most reverent ceremonies. It Is not a day for celebration or hilarity, but a day for the quiet paying of our deepest respects. Not only shbuld the day be cele brated by the G. A. R.. the Spanish American War veterans and the American Legion, but 11 should be observed by all citisens everywhere. .Everyone should feel the great debt which they owe to these men and boys and should do this least poss ible homage to them. What a wonderful thing it was which prompted these men and boys o f the yester years to go forth to bat tle In the defense of home and na tion and how heroic many of them were 'tn leaving their hbrrfes and •dear ones, well knowing that they might never again Join the home circle. How much better, too. is the world today because these men and boys were willing to make these sac rifices. the benifits of which we en. Joy. How small then and unworthy we ahouid ~be If vve M W to remetn- ber and do honor to these who sac- - rif iced all for us. Yes, poppies still bloom in Flan- der's field; rhododendrons still wave in the southland; and wild flowers -itUl flourish in Cuba and the Phillip- pmes, but what of us here at home in the secure enjoyment of home privileges? We cannot fail these who have made our grehter enjoy ment possible. Let us make this Memorial Day all that is good and sacred in the memory of our de parted heroes. cants are rendered sterile; to estab lish requirements of physicians' certi ficates and providing for an appeal from the order of the county clerk denying the license. One has only to visit the state hos pital for the insane at Salem to have the importance of the passage of such a law forcefully impressed upon them We cannot afford, merely front the standpoint of economics, to go on propagating a race of persons whose sanity is predestinated to be unbalanced. Our state hospital is' full of those who from various causes have become mentally unbalanced. There are hundreds of others who are not so seriously affected as »to need incarceration and yet if allowed to marry and propagate the race, they present a real menace to society. Cer tainly they should be allowed life and ail of the happiness which they can get out of it. but they should not be allowed to go on creating misery for future generations. "Recent investigations have proven that from 75 to 80 per cent of feeble mindedness is attributable to hered ity.” says Dr. J. N. Smith, superin tendent of the Oregon state hospital for the feeble-minded. Here is an opportulnty through the passage of this law to end the exceedingly heavy burden placed upon the public for the support of a state Institution, at least for future generations, and we be lieve that the voters should pass this bill by all means. We note tn one of our exchanges this week that the bakery in the town in which that paper was pub lished was forced to suspend business because of so much outside bread being sold through the stores there. That is poor way to encourage home industry. We cannot fail to feel that the same condition may con front Newberg whenever we see these big Portland bakery trucks come into town each morning. We believe that the local bakeries should be" given the preference at all times. We can never build up Newberg on any other program than this. With street paving and sidewalk work going on, Newberg is rapidly becoming. * busy place. Berry pick ing will seen commence and from then on until fall the farming com munities will also be hives of in- dut-uy. We cannot help but admire the beautiful shade trees on some of our streets and at the same time we feel like joining with the ladies o f the Civic Improvement Club In strongly protesting against the cutting down of these masterpieces of nature.
