This bill passed the Hous« was killed In the Senate, but a sim ilar b ill be came a law In the session o f 1919. In 1908, upon my own motion and at my own cost, I instituted suits before the Railroad« Commis sion against the W ells Fargo and Pacific Express Companies o f Ore gon for a reduction o f express rates. Both these suits were decided in fa vor o f the shippers, and a reduction o f twenty per cent was made In the Oregon rates, saving to people o f Oregon thousands o f dollars. A t the 1919 session, I Introduced the Roosevelt Coast M ilitary H ig h way B ill, appropriating 93.500,090 contingent upon the governm ent ap propriating a like sum for the pur poae of building a highw ay along the Oregon coast from Astoria through Clataop. Coos and Curry counties to the California line, which passed the legislature, was referred to the people at the spelal election June 3rd, 1919, and was approved by a vote o f two to one. And a bill haa been introduced by Congressman H aw ley of Oregon asking Congress to appropriate the sum o f 92.500.000 to match Ore- gon’s appropriation. California and Washington have Introduced bills in Congress asking tbe government to build a highway from Puget Sound along the Washington coast con necting with the Roosevelt H igh way and along the California coast to the Mexican line, and the State o f California has voted 94,000.000 for tbe building o f this road. Should these bills be passed by Con gress. it w ill result in a highway from Puget Sound along the Wash ington, Oregon and California coasts to the Mexican line. During my term as Register o f the U. S. Land O ffice I worked for tbe revision o f the public land laws In the interest of the homesteaders who were seeking to settle the wild lands o f Oregon. I prepared and had Introducd in Congress providing for an annual six months’ leave of absence for the purpose o f giving the homesteader an opportunity to earn money to live on w hile improv- inghis homestead and to allow those who had children o f school age an opportunity to send them to school, which resulted in the Leave of Ab sence Law. I stand squarely for more and better roads; for irrigation of our arid lands; fo r the improvement of our rivers and harbors; that - the government build and maintain all roads in the national forests for the survey and classification of all laads in the Forest Reserve; that tbe non- timbered, agricultural and {erasing land may be segregated and thrown open for settlem ent; for a bigger and a grater Oergon. ’ B.
