A number of English walnut
trees about town that are coming
into bearing make it easy for the

what they might have had now,
had they set trees of the right kind
several years earlier.
Much de
pends. too, on the term, "righ t
kind,” for there were a number of
trees brought In here from Cali
fornia several years ago and sold
at good stiff prices that ware not
suited at all for Oregon and they
proved to be utterly worthless.
And speaking of walnuts; L. T.
Haward, who has charge o f the
Thomas Prince walnut farm at
Dundee, was in the Graphic office
a few days ago and said that wal-
nnt shippers were suffering loss
and much annoyance by having
their packages broken open on the
way and walnuts stolen.
Senator McNary and Congress
man Hawley are both from Salem
and both are studious and active,
but tbe senator appears to have
the better knowledge of the value
of a good press agent, for we hear
o f him through the dispatches
from Washington a doxen times
where mention is once made of
Mr. Hawley, although the latter
lias been In Washington many
years longer than has the senator.
It is said that Mr. Hawley is
known about the nation’s capital
as being one of the most tireless
readers of books among congress
men

safely say that Newberg will give
a helping hand when there is a
call for permanent work.

to boost for the road, calling on
the Graphic for publicity In the

hundred
and
thirty-two
years ago the convention which
framed our Federal Constitution
completed Its task.
For nearly
four months the convention had
been at work.
Its deliberations
were behind closed doors.
Its
members were engaged in a d iffi
cult undertaking and discussions
and quarrels on the outside over
the proposed document would have
needlessly confused and prolonged
the difficulties.
In the convention sat some of
the brainiest men o f the day.
Washington was president o f the
convention. Franklin, then eighty-
one years o f age, waa there. Ham
ilton. with his constructive genius,
was there. Seven o f the delegates
had been governors of states and
twenty-eight had been members of
Congress. Two later became Pres
idents of the United States and one
a Vice President, and others held
or were destined to hold high po
sitions of trust and responsibility.
Eight had been signers o f the Dec
's ration of Independence and some
had been members o f the famous
Stamp-Act Congress.

Hancock and that other great
patriot. Samuel Adams, did not
like It.
Patrick Henry wished to
demand of 'Washington "a reason
for his conduct" in promoting the
Constitution.
Virginia was the
tenth state to ratify, little New
Hampshire having beaten her by

There was opposition and plenty
o f it. The legislature o f Pennsyl
vania forcibly secured and- held in
their seats two members o f the
opposition in order to have a
quorum while a vote on ratifica
tion was taken.
That vote stood
forty-five favoring the Constitution
and two opposed. There were dif
ficulties to ovércome in framing
the document and other difficulties
in securing Its ratification.
But
it was accomplished and the .his
tory of the past one hundred and
thirty-two years déclarés the wis
dom of the act.
How like current history and
current events the discussions and
the history of the above critical
period read!
Many o f the argu
ments used today against the pro
posed League o f Nations are prac
tically identical with the argu
ments against the adoption of our
Conatiutloa. There were men who
were fearful then; as there are
today. There were those who were
afraid of surrendering some State
sovereignty then; there are three
who fear the loss of national sov
ereignty today.
There were those
who were apprehensive that some
statee would have an advantage
over others; and this is true today.
National
affairs were chaotic
then; world affairs are chaotic
today. There was suspicion then;
there Is suspicion now. A fter the

fectlve. however, and people began
to understand something of its
purpose and meaning, suspicion
was allayed and order in matters
governmental and commercial was
established. To the United States
the Constitution was tfie greatsst
