How the first American soldiers to
arrive in Paris impressed the corre
spondent o f a certain South Ameri
can newspaper is indicated by the
following excerpt from Inter-Amer
ica.
Large, slow,
phlegmatic,
the
Americana filed through the streets
of the city (Paris) without being af
fected in the least by the “ parade.”
They are dressed rather as cow
boys than as soldiers, and they savor
of the far West. Among them these
is no display of gold lace, no fine
trimmings, and barely an oak leaf,
an eagle, or a star shows on their
collars or shoulders to indicate their
rank. They are strong and healthy,
and they are not warlike.
They give the impression of be
ing good, frank, well-trained boys;
and they will get themselves killed—
since this is what they came for—
and they will die in the Danteaque
waste o f No Man’s Land with great
valor, while seeking with their al
most infantile blue eyea the maternal
boaom o f their native heavens and
the soft horizon o f the prairies.

“ Anyhow,” said the patient wom
