Low prices. We iu this country have experi enced nothing like the floods which have taken place in otheT countries, ■ays a London correspondent. Per haps the most disastrous flood which has happened in England occurred in 1912, when East Anglia w si par tially submerged. No less than $35,- 000,000 worth o f damages wan dot to the dintrictn round Norwich, Ips wich, Nottingham and Leicester, and nearly 100,000 people were drive from their homes. Prance has had more than its •hare o f deluges. Most o f us re men her the fearful Paris floods o f 1910 when the Seine overflowed, canting over $30,000,000 damage. Again, in 1875, larged tracts of land around Paris were submerged and damage to the extent o f $15,000,000 done. Uncle Sam, too, has suffered very ,badly from floods, the most dime- trous being the famous Johnstown floods o f 1889. Heavy reins earned e sudden rise o f the Susqnehannn river and its tributaries, with the !• » suit that numerous prosperous towM and villages on the western slope o f the Alleghenies fo r 40 miles around were completely devastated. Six thousand persons lost their lives, in cluding. 1,500 burned to death at Johnstown, where the iron furnaces set fire to the driftwood and build- ings. In-March, 1913, an appalling dis aster o f flood, Are and storm over- ' whelmed Indiana and Ohio, result ing in the death o f 7,000 people, while 250,000 were rendered home less ; $10,000,000 worth of damage was done in a few hours. Tw o years previously s dsm burst over Austin, Pa., resulting in the destruction o f the town and the death o f 4,000 o f ! the inhabitants. t* J. L. [M a r M U a lw M } Just how high-spirited the allied aviator ia can only be guesaed from the stories o f his daily life that come bark to the civilian world. Lau ranee La Tourette Driggs, who has collected the hero talea o f the air acouts on the western front, •ays in a recent issue o f the Out look : “ I f medals and military crosses were consistently awarded, every airman would o f necessity be almost daily decorated.. Hia oppor tunities are always thick upon him. Embracing death ia easy to the air man, compared to the pain o f con fessing a shameful act to hia fellows. That kind o f torture eventually drives the remorseful pilot to delib erate suicide: •' “ The story o f one such episode ia well-known to the older members o f our corps. One poor frightened lad who fled in terror and left a fellow aoout alone to fight hia way clear of an overwhelming force returned headlong into the combat a few min utes later and hurled his machine deliberately into the nearest enemy airplane. Both machines fell to gether, their wings broken and both engines blazing with fierce flames. By common consent the*,enemy air 'fighters withdrew from the field— all knowing too well the cause o f this terrible sacrifice. Impelled b y that noble chivaky o f the air service they paid tribute to this desperate act o f atonement.” There were scenes o f mingled sad ness and exultation in the engine- rooms of the interned German lin en when thé" Berlin orders came com manding the destruction o f the inter nal mechanism, relates the New York Tribune. T h e engineer loves his engine. T o many a uluff sailor the order to wreck the engines wi as a command to stab hia sweetheart Bach engineer had been instructed in advance what to do to put hia en gines oat o f commission, end ae he pat the taekle in place for the cruel Job he felt like en unwilling hang man preparing the gallows. En gineers end firemen wept es the cyl inders crashed, and many a senti mental fellow was prompted to n cord hia love for hia mistress o f power. ' W ith chalk they scrawled their sentiments on the great machines they were first to maim and then to leave.* “ Farewell, sweetheart, till we meet again,” wrote one engineer. “ Forgive me, my bonnie, for the injury I do you,” wrote another. “ T o break you ia to break my heart,” scribbled another. “ M ay the parting be brief, dear one,” said a fourth. * There ia no doubt that many en gines would have been wrecked far worse than they were but for this love o f the engineers and mechanics for their fine mechanism. However, no such sentiment affected the mas ters o f the policy o f ruthlessqesa, with them it was a question o f pare logic and cold calculation.
