Read what it says and get busy i f you want a farm paper pub lished in Oregon without extra cost have said to the judge to whom she had applied for a divorce, and yet the hard hearted judge ruled against her. We think her plea was worthy o f serious considera tion. ________________ The time was when instruction was given in the schools regard ing the proper use o f capital let ters, but this must be one o f the lost arts, judging from much o f the copy that shows up at news paper offices, and the tendency seems to be, especially with those who hammer typewriters, to use too many, rather than too few capitals. This applies to the fair ly well educated in a general way, as well as to those o f meager ed ucation. . A whole wagon load o f O. A. C. students, a part o f whom were young women, came to Newberg last Thursday afternoon to visit and inspect the M. C. Wire & Son poultry yards out north o f town. I f poultry raising is to be their calling, and they stick on the job as closely as one or fwo o f the youngsters adhered to their cigarettes when they were loading in the wagon for the start, they will no doubt {jet a good hatch, though some will be stinkers, o f course. Our good friend, W. C. De Pew, editor and publisher o f the Lebanon Criterion, who is con fronted with a ten-thousand-dol- lar libel suit, is cheerful under the pressure. This is what he says: It is not Always the wisest thins: in the world for the average man to break into print over his -own signature. Like a Ford automobile, it at times re sults in a kick-back when it is cranked up too hard. It isn’t at all likely that Frank Steen had any intention o f libel ing anyone when he wrote a communi cation for publication in The Criterion, nor did the editor when he gave it space in the cwhunns o f his paper. However, others think different, nd the consequences are that both Steen and the editor are defendants in a libel suit. W e don’t believe that either Shakespeare or Solomon originated the following little phrase: “ The wisdom o f the average man is in many ways tike unto the wisdom o f an ass.” How ever there is much truth in it. The funny part o f the conten tion—that is, to those who are Danville, Illinois, the heme o f not paying the lawyers—is the Uncle Joe Cannon, has voted dry fact that while Mr. DePew is one and the wave o f prohibition goes o f the big boosters through the marching on at a pace that will columns o f the Criterion for the ere long overwhelm the whole $6,000,000 road bonding proposi country. Graphic sends the following clip ““ He don’ t gamble or drink or anything like that, but, oh, if you could just hear him snore once you would’ nt blame me for leav ing him, judge. ” This is what a New York woman is reported to ping from the Poughkeepsie New York, Star, which our ex change editors will no doubt ap preciate: Wby docs a calamity like sn impend ing war cause men and women to burst into song? The Star has been flooded o f late with poems written by well meaning citizens on the war which the United States threatens to enter. Lord Bryce not long ago, when asked what in hit opinion wae America’s greatest need, replied, "P o e ts.” That may be. W e are a cold and un romantic lot in this country and wo need some kind o f a warming influence. The Star believe# in poety and wo should like to see real poets encourag ed. But we wish to be eparod the or deal o f bad poetry. Poetry which does not scan. Poetry which is lame and halt. Poetry which makes the cold chills run down your back. And this is the kind o f poetry which comes to the editor’ s desk when calam ity threatens. Throughout the land there are persons who sit and wait, seemingly, fo r something dreadful to happen so they can embalm it in undy ing verse. With rolling eye and bulg ing cheek they spread themselves all over about ten deep pages and then they send the handsome effort tooth s editor. Some editors are young and tendon: hearted; they have not seen much o f the world and its horrors. So they fal for this poetry and put it iij their pa per where seeing and reading it, count less thousands are made to mourn. This poetry deals with death in its worst forms. Or with the miseries o f those who cannot die but would, gladly, if they knew that someone was writing poetry about them. The Star believes in poetry. We are even willing to print it in our paper if it will only conform to certain well rec ognized rules regarding its construc tion. We have no idea o f trying to suppress any meek, inglorious Milton. We only desire to protect the public and to save ourselves from grief and sorrow. So, good, my poet, pray see that your rhymes rhyme and your met er meets, before sending It out upon the world. OUR WEEKLY CHATS ...
