is possible with imitation

made temporarily tight
with stove putty which

The Oregon Co-operative Dairy
Exchange is now completely or
ganized and ready for business.
The exchange was organized
to assist the Oregon dairymen
t o improve and standardize their
butter and market their cream
at a just profit, and to place the
butter in profitable markets in
sufficient lots of uniform quality
and pack to work an expansion
o f the Oregon butter industry
Reasons for its support are thus
stated by E. B. Fitts, extension
specialist at O. A. C.
It stands for better dairy pro
ducts, for the payment o f cream
on the basis of quality, for econ
omy of production and manufac
ture and for equitable market
ing. It insures permanency of
the dairy industry and mainten
ance of prices. It affords protec
tion to the individual dairyman
and the small country creamery-
man. And it enables Oregon to
profit by its natural advantages
o f climate and teed.
The officers are Ed Carey, pres-
dent; A. W. Peters, secretary; C.
E. Frevert, manager, and C. C.
Colt, market agent.
Forces -active in the organiza
tion o f the movement were the
State Grange, the Oregon Dairy
men’s Association, Oregon Jersey
Cattle Club, Oregon Holstein
Cattle Club, the Dairy Division,
Extension Service and Experi
ment Station o f the Agricultural
College, and the State Dairy and
F o o d Commissioner’s o ffic e .
Fifteen creameries already be
long to tfte exchange, and this
number will probably be dou
bled within a year.
. „
" I t is working to im prove Ore
gon dairy products, t o better
their marketing and get maxi
mum returns for the dairy farm
er,” says Professor Graves, "and
every dairyman and every cream
ery man of the state should boost
tor the success o f the c x c h a ^ e .”
The office o f the exchange 1s
122 North Fifth street, Portland.
SALES AT THE FAIR
This year a Holstein sale is to
be held at the state' fair at Sal
em. This is the fii>t time a
dairy sale has been attempted,
though past efforts in the beef
cattle line have not been alto
gether successful. While it seems
the logical thing to expect that
a big crow d would aid a sale,
yet mariy believe the counter at
tractions—amusements and rac
in g -w ill distract the minds o f
those interested.
On the other hand, at the big
live stock shows in North Port
land, as well as at North Yaki
ma and Lewiston, the sales have
been one o f the big features o f
the occasion and have been a
good share o f the attraction.
We believe the state fair should
embody sales in its program,
and have them a part o f the edu
cational side o f the fair itself. It
would be a great convenience for
a host of people if it could be
brought about, and would save
both buyer and seller time and
expense. It would be tor the
former a chance t o kill tw o birds
with one stone and serve tw o
purposes at one time. It would
be o f benefit to the rural popula
tion of the state and serve the
seller well by bringing his crowd
to him. It would be of value to
all the people—but ¿ it should
have a definite place on the pro
gram.
We hope to see the time when
every day V the state fair week
will have its live stock sale. It
is w orth while to all spectators
to see how animals sell—animals
which furnish meat or milk or
w ool or other things o f use to
hnmanity.—Oregon Farmer.
LEWIE’S LAND AND LOAR LAV
C. C. Chapman, editor and
publisher of the Oregon Voter, is
submitting thé follow ing resolu
tion to all the Granges and Com
mercial Bodies o f Oregon:
Whereas, the so-called People’s
Land and Loan L aw , if adopted
by popular vote in November,
would become part of the Con
stitution of Oregon, and
Whereas, it would make all
f rm-owners and home-owners
mere tenants o f the state, pos
sessed o f empty titles and bur
dened with the obligation of
paying each year the full rental
value c f their homes and lands
into the public treasury, and
Whereas, by its provisions for
loaning $1,500 cash w ithout in
terest for five years to anyone
who with his family has failed
to accumulate prqperty o f the
total value of $2,250, it penal
izes thrift and puts a premium
upon sbittle88ness and extrava
gance at taxpayers’ expense,
therefore be it
Resolved, that we urge oar
membership and all other intelli
gent citizens to give attention to
the revolutionary proposals o f
this radical measure, so it may
be voted dow n by so large a ma
jority that the prom oters o f this
single tax legislation’ m ay be
brought to realize the futility of
encumbering the ballot with
their visionary but dangerous
schemes at every general elec
tion.
