Peterson, who lives across the river in Marion county, has been discussing with County Judge Bushey, of Marion, the matter o f an appropriation by the county court, a sum for sustaining a county agricultural expert. The judge is opposed to the appropriation, while Mr. Peterson stands for the expert. The public meeting held at Friends church on Thursday night o f last week tor the mis­ sionaries to China, Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Simpkin, was well at­ tended. The first speaker was K. P. Yang, a native Chinese who was cqnverted at the Friends mission at Chengtn, West China, where the Simpkins have been laboring for about nine years. He is at the head o f the. Y. M. C. A. work in that city and he gave a very good ac­ count of the work being done there, speaking fairly good En­ glish. He spent the ereater part o f the past year in studying in England, and recently came from New York City, where he spent a month or more. He is well informed and is a man o f keen perception. Mr. Simpkin told of some o f their experiences daring the Boxer trouble and other incidents of the work in a very entertaining w ay. He said the province they were working in had a population equal to that o f Germany, and that all told China had about twenty provinces with a population equally as great. He said that in this province there is but a very small percent of the terri­ tory where the people have any sort o f wheeled vehicles at all, the burdens all being bourne on the shoulders o f the people.
