In Rabins tha Young Fish. Tbe brook trout la a uest bulkier, bat does not belong to tbe group of flab which cans for Its eggs and young. When tbe function of egg laying is completed and tbe nest covered with gravel tbe parent fish seem to feet that their whole duty has been performed, and they depart leaving both eggs and tbe young when they are hatched to tbe cere o f nature, and nature, it most be confessed, is generally neglectful of her charge. Early in autumn tbe mature brook trout in pairs seek tbe gravelly bot toms o f shoals and spring runs. Here with noee and fins they hollow oat a shallow basin and make it scrupulously clean. This is their nest, and over tbe bottom tbe eggs are scattered, covered with gravel, and tbeir duty to posterity Is ended. Only a small proportion o f the eggs deposited naturally are fertilised, and many o f these are destroyed by spawn eating fishes. Moat o f tbe tiny fish which do develop and succeed in punch ing a bole through tbe egg shell with tbeir little tails and emerging into a watery world do so-only to find quick lodgment in some larger fish. Aa a foster parent tbe trout culturist Is a greater success than Dame Nature. Tbe latter, under tbe most favorable circumstances, rarely succeeds in hatch ing more than 10 per cent of tbe egga deposited, while tbe former expects to develop Into wiggling fishes nearly 60 per cent of tbe eggs obtained.
