Taylor were in collision about 100 miles southeast o f Nantucket, and the T ajtor was com pletely cut in two, so that the bow and the stern parts floated apart. That woe a singular thing in itself, but the sub sequent behavior o f the divided halves was more singular still. Since they floated in h part o f the ooean that is much frequented each sec tion o f the Taylor was sighted more than a score o f times by passing vessels within a few weeks after the accident, and the com pilers o f the pilot charts at W ashington took advantage o f that fa ct to trace the different courses carefully. On Aug. 86 it waa 100 milea east o f Cape H enlopen, at the entrance to Delaware bay, and some 400 m iles from the spot where the collision occurred. In the meantime the stem , after starting toward the eoat, turned northward, passed Boston 100 miles off the coast on July 9, and haring approached within a few m iles o f Matinicas island sheered off to the west and went sahore at Wells beach, on the coast o f Maine, on Aug. 7. T he length o f its wander ing course was about 450 milea. Why did two porta o f the some •hip thus m ove in nearly opposite directions? I t appears that the shape of the stern portion o f the wrecked vessel was such os to present s much larger area to the wind than the bow portion offered. T he latter was little influenced by the wind, but obeyed the d rift o f the ocean water. Between the gu lf stream and the Am erican coast there is a current o f relatively cold water that flows from the north, and it was this current that carried the bow o f the ship along the oosat toward the south.
