Edith Hill Booker, which occurred a t a P ortlan d hospital on last Satur d a y. The deceased lived near Dundee fo r a time, but m o v e ! to P ortla n d 1 foitoW ing her election a s president o f the state W. C. T . U. H er death was hastened, i t is stated, by her a ctivity in th e interest o f the "O regon d r y " cam paign, which is now on. She w a s a brilliant wom an and a forceful platform speaker. I t n o w requires four trucks to handle the express and baggage m t the depot, and yet it seems difficult for the Southern Pacific officials to wake up to the fact th a t N ew berg furnishes enough business for the company to en title us t o consideration. F o r instance, a committee o f citizens w h o called a t the S. P. headquar ters in Portland Wednesday to ask fo r quicker service between N ew berg and Portland, and also fo r a rate of one cent a mile on m on th ly ticket books, the same ra te th a t is given Sherwood, w ere given very little encourage ment. In discussing the question o f no stops between O swego and Portlan d , which the committee asked for, one o f the officials stated th at there was no percept ib le loss o f time in m aking these stops, an assertion that certainly w o u ld be hard to substantiate. The Queen Comedy Company w ill play " A Fam ily A ffa ir" at Lau rel Heights, or as generally known "Buck H eaven," a school d istrict near Laurel, Saturday n igh t, April 11. The company o f merry-makers are w orking for the Cbehalem Center gym na sium. They are planning to give the people o f th a t place their money's w orth in good hearty laughter.
