that we speak of exhaustion o f
other mineral resources is some
thing which need not be-feared.
The radium once extracted from
the orts becomes available for
continued use without appreci
able loss and becomes a perma
nent addition to the needed sup
ply. The same radium that is
placed at humanity’s service to
day may be used by our children
for many generations.
Whatever the percentage of
American ores now exported
from mines in private ownership
and largely under corporate
control, it is, in Secretary Lane’s
opinion, only equitable and
humane to assure America pre
ferential rights to the radium
on land still in public ownership.
It is for control to this end that
the legislation is proposed, and
such control is to be secured
through the immediate opening
of mines and the prompt extrac
tion o f the radium from the ores
mined.

I desire to notify the people of
Newberg and vicinity, both chil
dren and their parents, that
complaint has been made to my
office to the effect that boys are
making it a practice o f dropping
stones from the bridge over the
Willamette River as steamboats
are passing up and down the
river underneath this bridge, and
would ask the parents of chil
dren who are indulging in this
practice to please see that same
is discontinued, otherwise legal
steps will have to be taken to
stop such practice.

swore I’d get even with them

boys saw it was me and after he
got thru laughing he said go
back there in the corner and pick
out one and I’ll be gol durned if
I didn’t find more hats back there
in the corner o f that Hardware

department store in Dundee.
Them boys is good sports, they’ll
make good all the time and I hev
no doubt but if my pants had
blowed away it would have been
the same way, they’d hev give
me a pair. Well 1 went on home
got there safe enuf but when my
chickens come to meet me I
couldn't tell the roosters from
the hens cause the wind had
blowed so hard up thar on that
old mountain that it blowed
their tail-feathers all out. I’m
sure hopin’ that it didn’t blow
all the cannery ideas out o f them
fellers heads, cause I bought a
share o f stock, and hev set out
an acre and a half o f logan-ber-
ries. Oh! we’ve got to hev the
cannery, boys. Say, by the
way fellers, when you get ready
to spray your trees, get a Har-
die pump at Larkin-Prince and
you’ll hev it half done before you
begin, and say if you’re lookin’
tor an opportunity to save a

they’re going to put in a car load

for the 1914 Round-Up were
definitely selected as September
24, 25 and 26 by the board o f
directors here to-day. This early
action was taken at the urgent
request o f the Eastern railroads
who have agreed to put the
Round-Up on as an additional
drawing card for their regular
fall homeseekers’ excursions, in
order that they might have
plenty of time to get their litera
ture printed and distributed over
the country and get it into the
hands of the prospective home-
seeker. As the Round-Up, es
pecially during the past tw o
years, has drawn heavily from
the east and middle west the rail
roads have taken advantage o f
this and are combining it with
their regular colonist rates.

The day set apart for National
observance as a day o f prayer
for the National Prohibition
amendment on January 19, was
a helpful, inspiring meeting to
those who attended. The chil
dren from the public school
marched in a body to the church
where they were given a wide
awake talk with stories and
helpful suggestions bearing on a
later organization o f them as
young campaigners by Miss
Edith Minchin. We w i s h to
thank the different pastors who
helped make the program a suc
cess. The nex( meeting will be
held at Mrs. Frances Matthews,
402 College St., at 2:30 p. m.
