COLLEGE NOTES
In the basketball toumment
played last week, championship
honors were won by the Acade
my team, as they won all three
games played. The college day
students took second place and
the college dormitory team third,
while the faculty team secured a
clear title to the cellar position.
A large squad has turned out tor
regular practice this week and
the prospects aTe bright for a
good team.
Mr. Guy Needham, Y. M. C. A.
student secretary for Oregon and
Idaho, was at the college, Decem
ber 4, in the interest o f the
Religions Leadership Conference
held at Salem, December 5 and 6,
under the auspices o f Willamette
University. As a result six men
attended the meeting and gave
a report of it at the Y. M. C. A.
meeting on Wednesday. The
delegation consisted o f Melvin
Elliott, Robt. Dann, Ross Miles,
Angus McLean, James Thomp
son and Victor Hoskins.
In chapel Friday morning of
last week Pres. Pennington
awarded the official “ Q” to the
following football men: Arthur
Benson, captain; Floyd Bates,
Dale Butt, Frank Colcord, Robt.
Dann, Lloyd Edwards, Melvin
Elliott, H arry Haw orth, Ross
Miles, Ellis Pickett and Delbert
Replogle. This was followed by
one o f the president’s character
istic chapel talks on “ Making
Good.” The devotional exercises
were led by Miss Edith Minchin.
Friday and Saturday evenings
were partly devoted to social
activities. On the former date
the third year preps, entertained
themselves in the Y. W. C. A.
room, and the following evening
the college sophomores acted as
hosts for the freshmen at the
dormitory.
The good weather o f Saturday
morning was “ a delnsion and a
snare” for a small party who set
out for the top o f Chehalem M t.
about 2 p.m.
Fortunately a
liberal supply o f "gru b” accom
panied the expedition, which was
a wise forethought considering
the personnel of the crowd. Ex
cept for the sight of five snow-
caps lighted up by the late after
noon sun, a near quarrel with an
irate property owner, a drench
ing rain and the jo ys o f sliding
down the mountain in the dark,
the trip was without incident.
The “ hikers” were the Misses
Gregory, Owen, Welch and Ram
sey and Messrs. Keeney, Bates,
Butt and Hawkins. Some mem
bers ot the party were rather the
worse for wear the following
day.
On Monday evening o f this
week occurred the first o f the
pupils’ music recitals for the tall
term. A pleasing program was
rendered including vocal, piano,
violin and cello numbers.
