THE OREGON SPUD
That the plain common potato
can be turned into a money pay
ing industry by manufacturing
the surplus crop into alcohol,
starch, glucose and desiccated
potato, is the announcement
made by C. C. Moore, assistant
chemist in the United States
Bureau of Chemistry, who was
a visitor at the Portland Com
mercial Club last week. Mr.
Moore is on a tour investigating
the potato production o f Oregon
with a view of securing informa
tion as to what is being done
with the surplus tuber. Approx
imately 600,000 tons o f glucose
is consumed in the United States
a year and 10,000.tons or more
is the demand o f the Pacific
Coast states. Practically there
is no starch or glucose factory
on the coast, Mr. Moore ex
plained, and the department is
desirous of encouraging the in
dustry. That this is a manufac
turing enterprise of considerable
dividend paying is plainly shown
by Mr. Moore’s figures, that be
tween $500,000 to $750,000 is
sent annually into the corn belt
for this product.

“ THE DEERSLAYER
A special feature in tw o parts
from the novel of J. Fenimore
Cooper produced in authentic
locations on Lake Ostego near
Cooperstown, New York.
‘ •The Deerslayer” forms a most
attractive subject for the mov
ing-picture film, because of its
freedom of action.and its strong
dramatic possibilities. The Vita-
graph Company, always on the
lookout for good thingrf, have
produced the story in a two-part
photo-plav, which will be shown
in this city at the Star Theatre
Friday and Saturday of this
week.
All who have seen this wonder
ful picture on the screen unite
in praising th e production,
which is at once educational and
yet extremely entertaining.
MEETING ENJOYED
A large number of members

ent and gave outlines o f the work
being accomplished there. The
delegates from Newberg were
Mrs. Edwards, Mrs. Wilson,
Mrs. McDonald and Mrs. Goff.
They also outlined work to be
