I Their Origin, According to an Old Railroad Tradition. The way the hell cord came into aae is about a« interesting a rail road tradition aa there is. Nearly every one of the older lines in the country claims to have originated it. One of tbe likeliest claimants is the Baltimore and Ohio. In those early days most of tbe conductors' tak ings were cash fares, and tickets were a rarity. Disputes with peo ple who either couldn't or wouldn’t pay were therefore of frequent oc currence. T o put these off, stop ping the train between stations, tbe conductor had to send a brakemsn ahead over the freight cars snd make a polite request of the en gineer. A bright young B. and 0 con ductor one day devised a plan to signal the engineer without sending the brakeman forward. He hung a stick on tbe engine cab and hitch ed to one end of it a clothesline which be ran back over the tope of the cars so that the stick would wriggle when the rope was pulled. He carefully explained his scheme to the engineer. Tbe latter looked at it scornfully and made no answer. Three-quarters of a century ago the maw in the cab waa a high and mighty person to whom no mere conductor could give orders. This run started, and^it waa not long before the engineer saw th# stick signaling him to atop. In stead of even slowing up, ha let out the throttle a few notches and grin ned at his fireman. At the next sta tion they had to lie out for another train, and the young conductor came ahead with fire in his eye. The engineer finally climbed down from his cab and showed fight For tunately for railrpad history ths conductor was the stronger man. Stick signal« were thereafter obey ed on that train. Almost immediately the story reached the ears of the superintend ent. He at once saw the conduc tor's idea was a capital one and set about installing th« beD cord signal system, practically tbe same as it exists today.— Chicago Reoord-Her> aid. and tan, fully guaxanteed at_____ 90c Ladies long silk gloves, blk A white 69c Ladies ribbed top hose, special..........16« Ladies white foot hose, special........ 10c Mens Porosknit underwear, garment 46c Mens hose, ten or black........8 pain 26c Good work hose.........2 for 16c 4 for 26c W anted— Plain sew ing and SH O ES dress m aking a t 8 00 Franklin Save money by buying your shoes o f street.
