people got together. T o “ the
better element” it appeared like
a general round-up of the devil
and his forces, including the
lawyers and annihilation o f that
circus was the mildest result ex
pected. But there was a genuine
effort to undertand each other,
with the result that the circus
folks agreed to attend church,
Sundav evening, and the gover
nor and ministers agreed to at
tend the c i r c u s on Monday.
Nothing was left to a possible
misunderstanding.
It is a plan that might well be
carried out to the promotion of
peace and progress on other oc
casions.
Nothing will sooner change a
man’s attitude toward a situa
tion than putting himself in the
other fellow’s place. It is the
way to get to living close to the
Golden Rule. It is the way to
soften or eliminate prejudice and
to encourage charity and the
viewing ot things in a broad
way. Those Oregon City minis
ters are going to like circuses,
and those circus people will, very
likely, find that it is a good thing
to go t o church. What might
have been a bigoted fight resolves
itself into a matter o f mutual
benefit.
Such transformation is possible
in most all our affajrs of life. The
other fellow wasn’t born o f par
ents like yours, he wasn’t raised
as you were and his entire life
has been unlike yours. It is not
wonderful that he does n ot view
things as you do. Don’t try to
drive him without understand
ing him.
