The initial statement of Senator Dix
on, In regard to the sins of the admin
istration in lining op office-holders to
get Taft delegates to the ntaional con
vention, Is as idle as it is ill founded.
As long ago as last Dec ember. Presi
dent Taft directed that otttoe holders
in the southern states were not to fee
chosen ss delegatee to Chicago in hie
behalf, and every well posted politi
cian knows that In tbs distribution of
patronage in tbs southern states, this
administration has turned s deaf ear
to all p rseoavsrtlos suggestions.
People who recall the pleasure and
avidity with which President Roose
velt corailed the southern delegatee
tor >(r Taft four years ago, the em
phasis with which he Instructed Prank
H. Hitchcock to “Cinch ’em“ and the
glee with which he received the news
that Hltchoook had carried out his In
structions, regard the statement of
Senator Dixon as s blander.
Indeed it is not necessary to go
bach four y e a n to witness the seal
with which Mr. Roosevelt and his as
sociates have gone after these some
delegates. Only s fsw weeks ago.

Theodore Roosevelt has already
been put on the defensive in his third
term candidacy, more than anything
else, through the inaptitude of his
friends. Facing the unusual situation
of n third term candidacy, they have
not risen equal to the situation.
Senator Dixon. Roosevelt’s manager,
made s bad mistake In n recent ad
dress and Roosevelt must have regret
ted later that he did not look over hla
remarks before they were published.
Mr. Dixon said that for more than 60
years, the Republican party has con
trolled the policies o f the nation and
then referred to the loss of the House
by the Republicans in 1910 as the first
break in party rule.
But moet everyone knows that if the
loss of the lower House o f Congress
constitutes such s break in party nils,
the Republican party has been in con
trol in Washington only 32 years out
of the last 60, and since 1872, only 22
years out of the last 40. In that time,
there have been two Democratic ad
ministrations and many Republican
senates. In fact, the Republican party
is ss much in command today ss It
has been during s large part of the
time since the beginning o f Grant’s
second administration,
Mr. Dixon laments the loss o f the
House In 1910 ss an unprecedented
disaster. Yet. in lour of the Inst seven
preceding Republican administrations,
the House was lost In the mid-term
year, in 1874, 1878, 1882 and 1890.
Mr. Dixon o f course tries to throw
the blame of this condition on Presi
dent Taft, but the truth is that it was
ss much the Senator’s fault ss any-

such as it is impossible to bake
with home facilities, comes from
our ovens every day. Don’t take
our word for it. Just try a loaf
or tw o and no further argument
will be necessary. Our bread is
good for the body and brain. It
is a complete food of itself and as
toothsome as it is wholesome.
Positive in the belief that s change
is needed for the best interests of
Oregon in the United States senats,
many newspapers in Eastern Oregon
have openly declared themselves for
Ben Selling to succeed Senator Jona
than Bourne.
In a recent Issue the La Grande
Evening Observer editorially remark-
"The announcement that Ben Sell
ing will make the race for the senate
against Jonathan Bourne Is received
with considerable satisfaction, for all
know that Selling is a thoroughly pro
gressive cltisen and stands for all
the measure« that are dear to the
people, having been one of the legis
lators who not only helped Inaugurate
the new form o f government in this
state, but also has been onq of those
who has constantly stood on guard
to prevent repeal of any o f the meas
ures.
"Mr. Bourne is practically a non
resident of this state and la scarcely
a taxpayer. He spends his entire time
in the east and seldom visits the state
that has honored him. By the way,
Mr. Voter, have you ever seen Jona
than Bourne? What do you know
about him other than to receive a let
ter occasionally written by a paid
stenographer and signed with a rubber
stamp? Can you point to anything of
Importance that he has done for Ore
gon? Yon know of course that he
voted with Aldrich and the. rich men
of tha east on tariff issues. You know
he owns s large cotton goods manufac
turing plant on the Atlantic seaboard
and that he is reputed to be worth
$15,000,000. You know also that his
Interests in Oregon are so meager that
his tax is exactly $2.44 according to
the Portland Journal of Sunday, Mar.
3rd.
"All of these things being true, don’t
you think it is time to replace him
with a citizen of the state— a man
who has lived over half a centjury
in Oregon—who has property nowhere
else and who stands his share of taxes
and works every day in the year to
boild up his state?
"Is It not time for Oregon to be for
Oregon, as Bill Hanley mays, and de
sist from sending s rich aristocrat
whose interests lie in eastern states
to assist in making laws for Oregon?
"The people have a splendid oppor
tunity to elect a man who will repre
sent Oregon and the Oregon system,
for Ben Selling sided materially in
outlining and paasing every law that
gives the power of government direct
ly to the people In this state.”
