Side Greenhouse 8 Governor William E. Russell, o f Massachusetts, said, “ Make a living, but remember there is one thing better than making a liv ing,—m a k in g a lite.” M ost people are so absorbed in mak ing a living th at they forget to make a life. M any o f us spend our best energies, the best years of our lives, a c c u m u l a t i n g money, lands, houses, stocks. We spend com paratively little time in real living; we are alw ays goin g to live,—to m o rro w , next week, next year, alter we have laid up a little more money. W e shall have more leisure, then; w e shall spend more tim e in sell-culture; w e shall take that lon g con templated trip abroad, visit the great a rt galleries Europe, and study the conditions of life in other lands. Next year, w e shall send the boy or girl to col lege, start a library, buy works o f art, and take time enough from our business o r profession t o get acquainted w ith our families. But to m o rro w , next week, or next year, finds us farther than to-dav from the realization ol ou r dreams. The *habit ot ac cumulating, of making a living instead o f a life, has so fastened itself upon us, has become so in tertwined w ith the fiber o f our character, that it has already mastered us. We are slaves in its iron grip; and, though we m ay g o on deceiving ourselves w ith the fiction o f to m o r r o w and to m o rro w , building castles in the air, dreaming o f the things we shall do by‘and by to make life pleasant and profitable, we are slow ly but surely losing even the desire to enlarge ourhorizori. A fine a rt is this,—learning to live. But h ow few people ever acquire it! I t is com paratively easy to become proficient in law, in medicine, in business methods, o r to become a statesman; but h ow rarely do w e find a man or a wom an w h o lives a true life, a life o f simplicity, o f refinement, o f culture, o f character-building. H o w few o f us develop our finer social or home instincts. We hurry at our meals; w e hurry to our place o f business; w e tr y to crow d more than an average d a y ’s w ork in to our w orking hours, and are all day pursued by a demon o f hurry. When we return home, we are tired, irrit able, exhausted, utterly unfit to enjoy the fam ily life, or to con tribute to the happiness o f those about us. In the rush and nervous hurry ot the day, we have used up all our energy. We have left no reserve tor the cultivation o f the higher side of our nature. W e are exhausted, sucked dry like a squeezed orange. The next morning, as soon as we have recuperated after the night, w e repeat the previous d ay’s routine. So we g o through life, mocked by expectations which are never realized, simply because w e never learn the secret of living proper ly, each day, as we g o along. The future is a delusion and snare, and he w ho banks upon it for bis happiness is sure to end in bankruptcy. It is as much our duty to enjoy life to-day, to be cheerful and happy, to fill it w ith pictures o f joy and glad ness, as it is to tell the truth, to be honest, upright, and in dustrious. Happiness to-day, now, is our duty, and it is a positive sin to neglect it. This putting o ff one’s enjoyment, hap. piness, until the sap o f life has been drained, until the nervous system no longer responds to healthy, normal stimulants, this w aiting until the fires o f life have gone out. and there is nothing left but the ashes, is not only foolish, but criminal. She wasn’t a new ly wed, but her ma had gone aw ay on a visit and had left her to keep house, and so she tripped forth one morning the first o f the week, to do the fam ily shopping. She first w eq t to the m eat market, and ordered some beef steak, some o f the nice juicy kind. W ith true housewifely instinct she ex amined the m eat before purchas ing and as it met w ith her ap proval, she calm ly announced, •‘ I'll take h alf a yard; charge it to pa.” The next customer, so it is said, found the proprietor in the refrigerator tanning him self w ith a brick.
